I am currently running my site on one server with the following specs:
- Dual Xeon 2.8GHz
- RAM 3GB
- Hard Drive 2 x 73GB SCSI HDD
- Linux 2.4.21-40.ELsmp #1 SMP Thu Feb 2 22:22:39 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
- Apache v1.3.33
- PHP 4.3.11
- MySQL Version 4.0.25-standard
I want to add another server to run the same site (one for apache and one for database). What should be the specs of the other server? and what should I put there (I mean should it be Apache or Mysql)?
I am thinking of having this server:
- TC P3200s - Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz (800FSB)
- RAM 2 GB.
- Hard Drive 2 x 73GB SCSI HDD
The host company offered me this:
P265D
Dual Core - Dual Processor AMD 265
2048MB RAM
2 x 160GB SATA Hard Drives
I am not sure what to choose. Can any one help.

For vBulletin hosting, AMD Opteron Servers are always the better choice over Intel Xeon boxes:

The chip itself is, however if parts of it are slower, like SATA drives compared to SCSI esp for a mysql server....

Thanks odysseus and Zachery.
If my only choice for operton is SATA drives (no SCSI) which one I should go for? and what should I put there (Apache or MySql) considering the current server that the site is currently running on.

it may sound like a broken record but best to provide info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 first before deciding on whether or what 2nd server to fork out big $$$ for - you'd hate to spend big only to find it still isn't what you need etc

Thanks eva2000. I actually did that and the optimization didn't help, most of the members complain that the froum is very slow.

Ah i see yes your situation adding a 2nd server just for mysql would help
i'd highly recommend this as your new mysql db server
P265D
Dual Core - Dual Processor AMD 265
2048MB RAM
2 x 160GB SATA Hard Drives
i'd choose a 32bit operating system though as 64bit still seems to have niggling issues and since you're only using 2GB ram it should be fine

I talked to the hosting company regarding cross connection of the two servers and my only choice is to order two new servers (replacing the existing one). So do you recommend ordering both of them with P265D (Dual Core - Dual Processor AMD 265).

What about the SCSI vs. SATA Hard Drives, is it a big deal or not an issue here?
Is there any special setup for two cross linked servers needs to be made. I mean when the hosting company do the cross linking and they install the RedHat on both of them, is there anything else that I need to consider before running the site on the two servers? any informative links will be helpfull. I usually deal with WHM and Cpanel in my servers.
Thanks alot for your help.

definitely SCSI for db server and you can get away with SATA on web server
as to special setup just remember to have 2 network cards in web server as explained at http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=111191

The thing is that the hosting company only offers AMD 265 with SATA drives
The link was informative and usefull, I should make sure that they install two cards on my server.

unless you can get your web host to upgrade one server to scsi at additional cost, sata should be fine for the time being
