email on subscription

is it possible to let the users decide if they want to get email when someone responds to a subscribed thread? its killing my smtp server!

Yes..
1) They can click on the Email Notification checkbox to turn it on or off.

2) Disable it by default in their control panel (or vice versa).

3) They can "Track" a thread without posting.

4) They can control all their thread subscriptions from their User Control Panel

However at this time if they subscribe to a thread, they will get an email notification. These notifications are sent out once per thread between visits. If a thread has 1 reply the member gets the notification and will receive no more until they visit the forums again. They also do not get notifications for their own posts.

To clarify what Wayne said, if they are subscribed to a thread, they will receive an email. However, you can take some steps so people aren't subscribed to as many threads.
