question about load balancers.

If i had a database server connected to 2 web servers behind a load balancer, would the traffic flow through the load balancer or would the servers connect to the internet around it?

I dont fully understand how it works and the reason i ask is because i was asking about unmetered internet connections... i.e how would i be able to have 2 unmetered 100megabit connections to 2 servers if they were behind a load balancer...

generally the load balancer is the first point of contact from the internet AFAIK
