I'm thinking of switching companies and I wanted to know which one had the best bang for the buck and has reasonable virtual server handling of databases? After communitech.net's experience I want a host that won't leave me high and dry when I need help with my database. (or simply give me an option to run myisamchk)

thanks everyone and again it's

(btw wandrer, I know you like vservers and that's why I put them down on my personal list)

:) Actually I'm curious... how much db space does vservers allow? Can anyone clue me in on this?

I've used site5.com and a burst co-locator....but I switched because of the message board hits from one and because of a terrible ongoing issue with server downtime on the other.

I'm currently with vservers and on a large plan. However, I called them on the phone to discuss hits allowed since their plan discribed it as unlimited. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't bounced off (or asked to make oth arrangements ASAP) at some point in the message board growth. I was assured that I was allowed 300K hits per day for the plan I bought into and at that point if it was a consistent daily hit average, they would notify me...and we would move me to a larger space (the only one left to me: dedicated server).

I like the professionalism of vserver, the HUGE operation that it is...the phone tech support (I used them 5 times yesterday trying to get all set up....brand new server) and each time they were nice, called me back to make sure I had resolved what I needed to on my end.

I'll let you know in the long run, but for this short few days, I'm happy.

Thanks Kathy. :)

I think I may go with vservers and then move a bit higher onto the totem pole.

BTW to ammend my first post Communitech fixed my db problem albeit a few mixed messages saying they couldn't. The tech support isn't bad but don't expect too much and you will be satisfied.

I think I will start looking for ads and other banner options for dedicated revenue

I might have to check out vservers. I'm very much less than satisfied with where I'm at right now.

Ok, I've decided to leave pair (finally!)

Vservers seems pretty good to me, but too expensive (I need 250 mb MIN)
So I guess it's then burst.net or site5.com, but which one?...

burst.net gives alot of space and features for relatively less mony. Site5.com seems not to bad either

Or has anyone another suggestion?

Can you tell me what's wrong with burst? Their package seems really good for the price you have to pay.

You first host is not usefull for me; I need at least 250 mb storage if not 500.

The second package seems not very good to me..

Have you any experience with them? And what about site5.com?

Thanks for the feedback though :)

About webaxxs.... don't get me wrong, their hosting is great, however let me explain that what kills you is bandwith. Their overages for bandwith are very high... That's the primary reason why I gave them only a 7 rating on another thread although I think performance wise it's really up there.

As for burst I heard bad things about their down time (site5 is hosted on burst) but it seems like they've compensated ?? for that? I'm not sure, best bet is to ask the customers.

(sorry I haven't been around lately - working on other projects)

how much db space does vservers allow? Can anyone clue me in on this?

I have a few Vserver Pro's which have 250MB apiece.

**Hint** **Hint** mySQL db's are 'unlimited'.

On one Vserver Pro, i run UDMSearch to index websites and that mysql database is ~500MB (not including the 220MB that is taken up by the website).

I've been around to many webhosts in the past, but when I found Vservers - I fell in love :)

Now over 1.5 years with them and am a very very happy customer.

thanks wandrer.

A very nice guy named chris told me that the db was included in the disk space allowance for vserver lite...sooo.. o.o Well that's still better than having a BAD hosting provider. Hopefully I will be able to STAY with this one, right? :)

wandrer

the db is probably included in the vserver lite (which I know nothing about), but for the vserver pro - the more you can stick in the database, the more HD space you can get :)

I still have no clue guys...My options are now burst or site5...(vserver is too expensive for me)

Anyone who can give some usefull feedback about these hosts? Of maybe suggest another host? My minimum diskspace should be around 500 mb and fee from $25 - $50 a month.

Mail Daniel from ultraspeedusa a request to make you a custom plan.

He should be able to give you 500 mg for 50 dollars although that is pushing it.

Tell him M.B. sent you and he will negotiate with you

here's a little suggestion for all of you... if you want to cover some of your hosting costs... sign up for those pay to search programs and integrate it into your site ...

This month i signed up and use Searchtraffic.com which pays US$0.05 per search made per 12 hrs. (I would use my referral link but it's against Searchtraffic's terms :( )

I have 1 dedicated server (US$430/month) and 2 virtual (US$80/month) accounts totalling around US$510/month - i am surpised cause to start off my first month so far, i have been making US$2/day for searchtraffic.com which helps cover some of my virtual accounts costs. That should increase once i add the search box to my other sites (yes, 1 account can be used on multiple sites :D)

i have contacted site5.com's support a while back and they were very responsive... although i did not sign up with them, i still have their ICQ numbers in my contacts...

I've chosen to go for site5, hope it's the right choice...Can't be worse than my current host (pair)

I know what you mean. We're in the process of switching to VServers from Interland. Get out now while you still can!

Also, after you switch, make sure that you notify your credit card company that you will no longer be accepting any charges from them, because they will charge your card, whether you cancel or not. We had a 4 four month credit, and they still billed us for another 6 months of dedicated hosting. :o

right now, my site on site5 is down. It was down for a short time yesterday, but today it's been down most of the afternoon.

I get no response from tech support. They have numerous ways to contact them... email, web ticket (which probably just emails them), ICQ support (not online or invisible).

No phone number!

I had been thinking of moving a lot of my accounts over to Site5, but now I have to think twice. The support seems to be lacking. They say to expect a 24 hour turn around, which may be acceptable most of the time, but when a site goes down I don't think it's too much to expect an immediate response.

So, it looks like I'll be searching for another host. I liked how vservers looked, but went with Site5.

not a happy camper... :(

Vservers has been my first and (so far) only host. I've been using them for ~8 months now, and like wandrer mentioned, one of the great features of the vserver pro package is unlimited databases. Tech support has always responded to any problems quickly and they also provide extensive documentation on server usage. Also, vservers supports vhosts, which make their virtual servers great for hosting multiple domains/websites.

I'd recommend vservers to anyone, and as soon as I scrape together enough money to break into a dedicated server I'll try one out. :)

Oh, by the way, I'm an authorized reseller.. *hint hint*

Hey Mas*Mind, be sure to post back here with your opinions on Site5... The list of features and price seem really good for what I need. Especially support for vBulletin, as I will be "upgrading" from my current UBB soon. I just hope Site5's support issues get cleaned up...

Which host? None of the above! I use http://www.ThinkHost.com and am *thrilled* with their tech support and flexibility...I'd definetly check them out. Feel free to email me (chris@mycoding.com) if you'd like me to elaborate a bit.

TWT are you affiliated with them? I've seen another suggestion from you on this forum. Quite honestly I have never heard of them....

Sonnet,

Nope! I have a site or two hosted there and am very happy with their service...not surprising that I sound like I work for them...but I praise them simply because I think more people should use them...LOL; you're not the first person to ask that question though.

Oh okay. Sorry about that. It just seemed like you like them a bit TOO much but I guess that's possible. I'm a bit hesitant of going with someone I've not heard too much about so... But if vservers is not for me I'll take your advice. Thanks!

You're right to be skeptical...however on other sites such as SitePoint.com a most inquiring about ThinkHost will likely draw several favorable replies, if not more. I guess the reason I like them so much is that the only two other hosts I've used took a lot longer on tech support...I became accustomed to waiting til the next day for a reply...

Good luck with your decision! :)

It may be different if you have a dedicated server with site5, but I've noticed support to be slow. Yes, I know I'm impatient, but 24 hours seems to be a bit long when you're working on your site and something is going wrong.

I've been down several times on site5. And since it's a shared server, there are others using the mySQL at the same time. I was running into "too many connections" errors with only 5 people on the board!

They said the down times were from 'abusers' who have been taken care of, but I just don't feel comfortable with them.

Here's a BIG issue... no phone support! none. All contact is via email, ticket support, or ICQ. Not even voice mail. It's a very uneasy feeling when your site is down for a couple hours and you can't call someone up.

Yes, their prices are good, but I've got to have more reliablity. I'm switching to vservers this week.

(sorry aaron, forgot about that *hint*) ;)

We had similiar experiences with site5. Great people to work unless the server was down and then those "abusers" made all things come to a halt. I had my share of days when we were down daily for several hours.......ICQ was available but it didn't get that poor server up and running. Chatting on ICQ with the tech support became a daily event......... (Hey Matt! You are still my favorite tech support guy!) I finally had to bail out and onto a bigger host system .....(after a brief stay at another host)...

We've made a great home with VSERVERS and we are very very grateful. We are on the Ultra plan....
