View Full Version : My own VB hacks Website?

Hello,
I'm planning to start a Website that supports VB forums software.
This site can develop any kind of hacking for VB (either freeware or not freeware).
It can also help integrating some softwares into VB.
My question: Do I need a permission from VB to do such thing?
I have an owned license for VB software.
Thanxx

If you keep the following in mind, i see no problems:
- If you plan to use the name vbulletin in the domain name, i suggest you ask permission from Jelsoft first.
- Keep to the license agreement (parts about redistributing significant parts of code).
- In general don't publish copyrighted material without permission (hacks of other authors for example)

What would be great is an index of the best vB hacks.

hi people,
Well i would be carefull here.As long as you are properly licenced jelsoft cannot do anything but you want a site like vbulletin.org where people can post there modifications aka "hacks" either free or paying but what resources do you as site owner have to ensure the people who use your site are properly licenced to use vbulletin ?.I mean at vbulletin.org they have some kind of system which shows wheter members are licenced or not (only moderators see this)
So to avoid possible trouble i would be verry carefull here because if your website is becoming populair .... you can guess what i mean
Also .....
owned licence means you have obtained the right to use vbulletin for life it doesn't mean vbulletin is yours it is still the property of jelsoft and they can still revoke your right to use the software if they find reason(s) to do so

Some very good points raised there.

Someone asked if Jelsoft would make it possible for other websites to authenticate vB accounts with Jelsoft and they said they were not planning any such system.
Sounds to me like that's all the due diligence needed. Does every Adobe Photoshop website require proof that you own the product to provide detailed explanations and tutorials and help on how to use the product?
Actually it is an aberration that vBulletin.com, vBulletin.org, and vBAdvanced will hardly even talk to you unless you can prove you own the product.
Good, bad, or indifferent, most other fan and product sites don't verify like this.

Good points raised there too. I don't know what I think about this now!

hi,
didn't mean to discourrage the thread starter. You could cover yourself by saying you do not support the illegal use of vbulletin.
Does every Adobe Photoshop website require proof that you own the product to provide detailed explanations and tutorials and help on how to use the product?
no but it is there right.Remember that every pirated vbulletin copy jelsoft looses money and they might increase there prices which would affect all of us paying customers ...
in general you cannot use the "vbulletin" name unless you have permission

A kind of related question, are companyname-sucks.com domains allowed or not? I mean I've seen sites such as paypalsucks.com but I know sites of this nature have been taken to court.
What would happen if someone started a site, vbulletinsucks.com ? Could Jelsoft get the site taken down or what? I've often wondered about domains of this type.

You can run your own site for vbuletin hacks but you cannot host any hacks without the author's permission.

you could simply use vbulletinsucks.com and have something like
BORED OF THE BORING ORIGNAL VERSION? THEN GO TO VBULLETINGSUCKS.COM TO FIND SOME DECENT HACKS SO YOUR VB DOES NOT SUCK!

He might be onto a good idea if he gets the "timing right" and a bit of luck going his way, as there's been talk in a thread over at vB.org about archiving the vB2 hacks, and also possibly the vB3.0 hacks also.
If this goes ahead in the near future, especially with vB 3.0 hacks. People will be looking for a good hack site that supports hacking for vB 3.0.
I wouldn't imagine there be much hacking support wanted for vB2 though.

The option to vote for archieving vB3.0 hacks was added as a joke (hence the smilie), but you would be surprised by the number of people who only think about their own board and have voted to archieve vB3.0 hacks also (which probably will not happen for a long time).

Here is some heavy legal reading that may have some bearing should Jelsoft want to take action:

Basically, if you plan to have an objectionable website, make sure it's posted in Tuvalu.
