If we upgrade, does that wipe out any changes we have made to the board?

No, upgrading will not remove any changes you may have made to the board.

As always, it only wipes out changes in your PHP files when you overwrite them.
The Templates and Phrases are left as they are and you change them manually.

So if a template has to be reverted for some reason, it will ask you first right? I've no file edits as far as I know but I do have some modded templates.

You need to go the AdminCP and then click Show Updated Templates and then either chose to revert your customised templates or manually make the changes.

The upgrade script will not revert any customized templates. You will have to to that on your own, if the you have customized templates that must be revertes.

Will upgrading from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1 (or say from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2 sometime in the future) remove any plugins?

Tue 1st Nov '05, 11:12pm
No. All Plugins will still be installed and active after the upgrade.

I'm having a strange upgrade issue on my test board. I uploaded the files, as usual, and when I run the upgrade script I get a page cannot be displayed message.
I thought could have been some sketchy uploads so I loaded them all again, no dice. It worked fine before, and I'm not a complete vB newb, but I'm not sure what's going on here.
Edit: I just reloaded my 3.5 files and it works fine, so something is up.

we would recommend that you fully upgrade your board rather than simply patch it wherever possible.
If it is recommended that we upgrade rather than patch it, why provide the patch? What disservice would I be doing to myself by not fully upgrading?

I can't believe that so many admins have solved the AJAX problem themselves and the only thing that Jelsoft could do was to include the ability to disable AJAX and still consider the problems as "currently unfixable" :rolleyes::rolleyes:
Of course it's a worse shame that those admins won't share their solutions :(

LOL same here.....
Message doesn't go away even after updating all of the templates.
It still show that I have 1000s of custom templates but once i actually search for them nothing show up since i have update them to 3.5.1
would have been good to actually make that message go away once the templates are updated to 3.5.1........... just don't release a new version just for that :P

How do we deal with the Datastore Cache?
Before the update I removed
$config['Datastore']['class'] = 'vB_Datastore_Filecache';

No matter what we do to help work out the issue, this is all you post. There is now an option to disable AJAX -- prevents the issue you have. Iconv is now used automatically if you have it to do character set conversions -- fixes the issue you have provided you have it installed. (If it's not compiled into your PHP, we can't do much else.)
If it's about the %u thing, any sort of searching will tie it to mod_security and it's trivial to show a demo of the issue for hosts. I've already shown this several times. We can't do anything about host misconfigurations.

Just to summarise what I previously wrote here: Does the patch 2 file overwrite just fix the security flaw alone while the upgrade fixes the security flaw as well as other vB bugs?

The patch simply fixes the security problems with IE and PHP, it doesn't fix any of the other bugs.
Its mainly meant for people who have expired licenses or who do not have time to complete a full upgrade until some time in the future.

Wed 2nd Nov '05, 8:30am
I am not sure.
Does this fix also correct the new PHP security issue (uploading)? You just wrote that you did a few workarounds, but i want to be sure.

It fixes it for vBulletin but its possible that other applications on your server could be affected so upgrading PHP is the best solution.

Wed 2nd Nov '05, 9:39am
The reputation template is missing the $footer before the </body> tag.
making the reputation page look very odd.
To fix the problem open and edit the reputation template and replace the whole template with:
$stylevar[htmldoctype]
<html dir="$stylevar[textdirection]" lang="$stylevar[languagecode]">
<head>
$headinclude
<title>$vboptions - $vbphrase[reputation]</title>
</head>
<body>
$header
$navbar
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">$vbphrase[reputation]</td>
</tr>
$reputationbit
</table>
[B]$footer
</body>
</html>
Now the reputation page will have a footer and will look much better ;)

To be honest it was my most terrible vBulletin upgrade ever but it wasn't anything to do with vBulletin. I had several templates to revert/redo as well but aside from that, the upgrade itself went very smoothly. :)

I have serious problems with my FTP access, is there any way I can prevent users from uploading pictures (that was the main security risk wasn't it?) until I can establish a working FTP access? Its at the PHP level so even disabling image uploads can still cause the problem since this happens before the PHP script is executed, the IE one can be prevented by disabling attachment viewing.

if the upgrade went smooth in 3.5.0 should it go smooth in 3.5.1, or is it a change in 3.5.1 that causes this error with eAccelerator/MMCache/APC

OK, not bad. Thanks for that hint.
But I could make a pretty good argument that vBulletin is so awesome and stable and maintains itself so well that I don't need to do admin stuff but once a month or less! So I still might not see that notice for days or weeks...

I can't understand the procedure. The text file included in the file doesn't match the instructions in the online manual and I don't know which parts of which instructions to follow.
The vb_readme.txt says
"Upload all files from the 'upload/' folder in the zip, with the exception of 'install/install.php'. Then open the 'upload/includes/' folder. In this you will find config.php.new. You should rename this to config.php and then open it in a text editor."
Then it doesn't go on to say what to edit in it once you open it in a text editor.
What is needed to just upgrade 3.5 to 3.5.1?

Then it doesn't go on to say what to edit in it once you open it in a text editor.
The best way to do it is always make a new config.php file each time you upgrade, so that you don't miss any possible change/s that have been made to the configuration file. Basically just open config.php.new you've downloaded, make the edits as per the instructions it contains and save it as config.php.
What is needed to just upgrade 3.5 to 3.5.1?
Download from the member area the version of the archive which doesn't include the images (because no images were changed). Unless you already have the 3.5.1 files. Then extract all those files, do the config.php thing I mentioned above, remove config.php.new and upload over FTP all those files. When your FTP client asks to overwrite, just do so.
If you already had the image files too, then don't upload them.
Of course remember to close the forum while upgrading or make sure by other means it can't be accessed.

Upgraded from vB 3.5.0 to 3.5.1. Had to do some template reverts like usually, but all in all a painless update. :)
Thank you for this latest upgrade!

There are 4 different versions to download. Do just need the XML files? The version says "Package: no images" seems to include an images folder despite being named "no images."
After editing the config.php file, do I drag all the files in the upload folder into the forum folder?

http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/upgrade :)
Would be nice if they did an update for each upgrade they do for us new "not yet informed on how exactly to upgrade/update our new found cool forums"
I read the forums, and didn't realize I had to upload the files and run the upgrade script. Kinda figured it out on my own. Need to create a thread that says "Plain Simple way to upgrade your forum" or "forum upgrades for idiots" If I had seen the latter, I would of headed there right away, as that's the place for me. ;)
I've got it all figured out, and looks like the upgrade is completed. Just a bit more help for the first timer would be apperciated. And as always, I could just be blind, and missed it entirely.

Well I have a couple questions, which I may know the answers already, but figured I would ask anyways.
1. If the upgrade only alters php files, then I am to assume any plugins or extensions will remain active from 3.5.0 Gold....however any code modification mods will be required once again.
2. If I created any custom templates, I will have to re-create them?

Does anyone have clear instructions on how to upgrade from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1?
I tried following the instructions in the text file and the online manual and the installation failed.
The intructions were not clear. I think they assume I already know to do some additional steps not written in the instructions.

Hi,
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but upgrading from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1, I uploaded the two files to the /includes directory, then ran the upgrade script, all the way through to return to the admin, and it still shows as version 3.5.0.
I've checked the files on the server, and they're indeed the updated files, and run the upgrade script again; actually three times now, and I'm still getting the same thing.
Any help appreciated...
Thank you,
William

Why are people surprised when the version number does NOT increment when they do NOT upgrade the software?
The upgrade from vB3.5.0 to vB3.5.1 has changes and bugfixes to nearly every file (60+ files and 15 templates changed from vB3.5.0 to vB3.5.1 (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1002391)).
If you patch/replace a couple of files, you are not upgrading the software -- you are patching the software. vB3.5.0 with a couple of patches/replaced files is still vB3.5.0.
If you want to upgrade vB3.5.0 to vB3.5.1, download a complete copy of vB3.5.1, upload the files to your website's forum directory (overwriting all the old ones) and run /install/upgrade.php. Your forum posts, members, styles, etc. are safely stored in the MySQL database.
Security patching is made available for those people who:
* Do not have time to synch up their templates
* Have modified the 3.5.0 PHP source files for vB and do not have time to migrate those changes to vB3.5.1.
* Do not have access to the Member's Area because their yearly access has expired
Everyone else should do the full upgrade.
unknowngiver,
Plug-ins and styles will be retained. Hacks/Mods will not.

I didn’t want to post this as a bug because it seems so trivial, however after adding the rel="nofollow" patch to the navbar, the template still remains in the CP as an “out of date custom template” was there something more, is this a bug, does every single link need the addition or how do I rectify.
Anyone else having this problem?

I love 3.5.
To upgrade all I had to do was close the board, upload new files, run upgrade script, open back the board. I had to rehack 2 files to get the CMPS and the gallery to work again, but it took no time whatsoever. Plugins seems to be working fine still :)
Nice job.

1. Yes, plugins remain intact.
2. Upgrading will not overwrite custom templates. Nonetheless you should seriously consider reverting any updated templates to get the full advantage of all bug fixes and improvements.

Just upgraded and the bug is fixed (I think). Thanks and sorry about my previous comment, I hadn't realised the fact about iconv (I learned what that php function was afterwards :p). Thanks again. :)

What is the reason for changing the reputation window to a new page?
I believe this question bears repeating because I have not seen an answer anywhere else and, as far as I can tell, it's not off-topic.
Why was the reputation popup window changed to a regular page?
If I want the old mode back, should I start slogging through the code to implement my own little hack?
