Don't know about the ping times to the UK for asmallorange.com, but it's one of the few hosts that are v-e-r-y friendly to vB admins.
Their shared account servers not only has mod_zip, it's Fast CGI enabled plus has eAccelerator, standard. They also have mysql 4.1 up and running (so it's ready out-of-the-box for 3.5.0). Haven't encountered any webhost that has all of those features for a shared account -- which makes them a creme-de-creme vB host (with a nice pricing scheme, and file only bandwidth for a price break too).
Check them out.

I agree with Chris, I've been with A Small Orange for 9 months now, and I am very satsified. :)
I've heard good things about site5 too. You might want to check that out.

ASO is well liked and I've spoken to the owner a few times, real nice guy. You can gain access to WHM for $5 more I think, so whichever plan you choose it'd just be another $5.

Let us know how things go 1-2 months down the road. I honestly don't think I've heard any complaints about ASO in the past so if you find one, you'd be the first I know of :).
Best of luck with your website and your new host!

I don't recommend ASO for referrals. ;) But thanks for the gesture (can I get some karma points instead?). :)
Any host that offers that much, service what they sell (you'll get to talk with Tim, not just some hired hand), and bothers to come here to ask for optimization tips for his setup, gets my approval for a vB friendly host.

I was just about to go with ASO until I found out they didnt have shared SSL which was a big point at that time, so I switched to site5. Overall I think site5's been pretty good, but they are starting to overload their servers, and that's going to be a BIG problem down the road.

I was with ASO and only left becuase I had another host who I had paid up front for the year. ASO are good and I would use them in the future when my 12 months runs out with current host. But I did notice something with them. Not sure if it was just me or not. When download from them via FTP (site files). Many times my FTP stopped downloading the sites files. I connected to other host and all was fine there download the site files from that host. This seemed to happen all the time with ASO via FTP when downloading site files as a large download (meaning all vbulletin files there for backup). Maybe it was just something going on at the time. But this happened on various different days. And I would have to pause the download, re-connect to there server and them resume it.
But I did wonder why this seemed to happen with them in the middle of my download, yet my other host was perfectly fine all the time and never did this.

I have been with http://www.lypha.com for over months now and I didn't experience any kind of server errors, downtime or other technical difficulties. Their packages are great, and very affordable.

Haven't found a host (even The Planet) that didn't stop in a middle of an upload. Downloads are fine, but uploads seem to always stop on uploading many files. Think the issue revolves around the anti-virus, because it seems to conk out on the largest files (especially vB's langauge one).
Why on large uploads I queue it (which will just resume a failed a connection on reconnect).

We use site5. We had ASO for a few months with nothing but time out errors on the forum. Nothing like that from site5.

Sounds like an issue on your end. I've uploaded several gigabyte files to theplanet, servestra, ev1, etc.

You're commenting on a reply that's a month old! lololol
Before Comcast fixed a bad CTMS, yes, but not afterwards. It's consistent to a server connection timeout limit. It's too regular to be a hardware fluke (it's the same on any computer I'd use to connect), let alone a connection.

Still, never had an issue, be it linux, windows, etc. I've been able to move GIGS of data both on my home network and though fat pipes from datacenters.

Just let everyone know again your connection speed and type. ;) It's not a Comcast connection, nor a BellSouth DSL's!!

I'd recommend Site5 (http://www.site5.com). I've been using them for several months; it's great hosting. :)

I'm thinking of going with them for my second site. It certainly looks feature rich but I'm trying to decide how much I can spend at the moment. Hows support for someone who is fairly new to the whole website thing?

Their support is really good. They helped me when I had some trouble importing an old MySQL database. They did all the necessary conversions, etc. Beyond that, I've had no actual problems with the service. I pay around $85/year, though, so it's not exactly cheap.

That's not too bad in £'s. I did hear somewhere that they limited you to a 200MB database though? At the moment that is more than enough for me, but the problem comes when my site starts getting busy around June / July next year, I have no idea how large it will get and I am unwilling to disable many options as it is a community site.
