I have recently purchased VBulletin software and registered a domain name 5days ago but my website is not yet up and running. Just out of curiosity i have searched the domain i have purchased through several domain name buyers and on some it says it can't be purchased yet on others it says it can be purchased? Is this because the site is not up and running or does it take a while for all domain register website to get the information that it has been purchased,

Thanks in advance.

Where did you purchase the domain? It should be ready within 5 mins max.

I've never bought a domain. My other admin is in charge of that stuff. Server side etc.

but do you have hosting? I assume you have to tie it (the domain) onto your server...

I am still looking into the hosting side of it. Gonna sort that out tomorrow (hopefully). Do you think this is why its showing as unavailable on some search engines and not on others? I always thought that once the domain name was bought that was that. I am a new to all this by the way

I'm less than new when it comes to server side stuff....

Yeah I would nearly bet money on the fact that you'll need a server and a domain before you can do anything :P

Oh and you won't get indexed until a while after you've started...

I thought it might be a problem with the fact that i haven't got a server sorted out yet but i still think its strange that some say available and some say not. If anyone has any more info I am more than happy to listen. just regarding the indexing I have been assured by the company i bought my domain name off (see above) that it will only take 10mins before I am registered with the top 10 search engines.

info below:

Enter your domain name and e-mail address below to submit your site to 10 search engines:-

Altavista
Aol Netfind
Excite
Google
Hotbot
Infoseek
Lycos
Northern Light
WebCrawler
WhatUseekSite URLE-mail Address
Now that you have entered your details hit "Promote Your Site", this can take up to five minutes so please be patient.

or am i just being nieve and it just means that i have registered with my domain purchaser that i want them to promote my site on witht these search engines (and it takes 5mins for my info to get to them)?

Another thing I wanted to ask is, what kind of software do you all use (ie for animation, graphics etc etc?) and are some of them necessary?

Cheers for the responses so far TheMusicMan and ATI4EVER.

Photoshop CS, Dreamweaver, TextPad. Dont really need a lot, since Vbulletin come with its own Template Editor. You can edit from your web browser.

NOTE: The reason some registars show your domain as being available, because it can take up to 72 hrs for all Internet DNS Servers to sync up to one another and discover the proper name servers. Untill than good luck on your site.

You don't need hosting before they'll class the domain as 'in use' and it shouldn't take anything like 5 days. What other registrars say is irrelevant really, you should be able to log in and sort your domain via the Control Panel by now.

Send them an email, get them to sort it out.

The search engine registration thing does submit your URL to all those search engines, but that's all it does. It doesn't guarantee you getting listed quickly, or even at all. That's up to the search engines themselves.

I have decided on a server provider (streamline.net). I have nearly finished the registration process and then i came upon this question:

STEP 2 (hosting details)

*(Sub)Domain Reg or Transfer:
ie: mydomain.co.uk (for Domain Reg) or mydomain (for subdomain).
(Click here (https://secure.streamlinenet.co.uk/signup/tu/new.php?name=sln#) to check availability)

I am given 3 options:

1) For Registration

2) For Transfer (inc DNS Server)

and

3) Sub Domain.

I already own the domain name so which option do i choose?

Transfer. You'll then be given the two nameservers you need to enter into the Nameservers section of the 123-reg control panel to point the domain to your hosting account. May take up to 48 hours to update.

You should be able to start working on your site by ip number, even before the DNS has propagated.
