they know in order to increase their userbase they need to give it away free and adless. it could actually help their purses down the road

heh, legal :p I was happy with Opera whether it had ads or not, but an ad-free version wouldn't make things any worse...

Yeah, when people want to upgrade to Opera 9, assuming Opera gives them the incentive to do so. This is kind of like what the Japanese did with the reparations they were forced to pay as a result of losing WWII (they were supposed to pay with cash and they paid with goods, effectively turning the reparations into an advertising campaign), except Opera isn't being forced.
