I've been browsing the support forum now for 30 minutes and have used the search function as well but I cannot seem to find a step by step tutorial that explains how I can modify the look of vBulletin?

I really would like to do a LOT of changes about the look and assume that this is possible. Before I start it'd be great to have at least some information and instructions at hand.

Does anybody know if there is such a tutorial?

There is the online documentation (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html), which shows you how to use the style and template system.
The steps you need to take depend greatly on what you want to change.

Ah, thanks I found this.

This will surely be helpful when modifying the single templates. However, it doesn't say what I need to do to create a brand new style/template from sketch. I would still like to keep the original template, just in case anything goes wrong.

How would I start here?
