Two decades of BBS experience?

Hardly.

Possible. BBS's were around LONG before forums and the WWW. I used to run Wildcat BBS back in the 80's on an old Leading Edge 286.

Looks like an old UBB-based board.

The "last message" column on the message board main page just lists the time of the last post in that subforum; not the poster or the thread title.

Don't know enough about it to pass judgement, though.

The slogan sounds like a vB slam, since vB is an "instant community." And what is the diff. between a BBS and a forum?

Andrew111888

There isn't.

BBS is just bulletin board system, and forum is a forum :p.

The old BBSs that were around 20 years ago were pretty primative. But dang, they were fun. ASCII art, chat rooms (yes, we had chat rooms way back then), and the origins of the pron industry. ;) You dialed into them via modem (I think 300 baud was the standard when I first started) and downloads took FOREVER. Best graphics you got was colored ASCII art. :)

I used to run Wildcat too, small world isn't it. :)

Coming soon, the culmination of two decades BBS experience.
Looks like they're still stuck two decades in the past. And somebody didn't take grammar lessons in school. ;)

Heh. Those were the days, huh?

Here's a blast from the past... ASCII art at it's finest.

Open a terminal (or command prompt) and type:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

(once connected, just sit back and enjoy the show, no further input needed)

If it is or isn't, they are correct; you can't have a community have instant success.

That sure brings back a rush of memories. Amazing what can be done with ascii characters. I think I like Windows Media Player a lot better. :)

Thanks for sharing.

Not 100% true, it does happen

Yep, I've seen it for myself a few times.

It all depends on what your community is about, for example, and if you already have advertisements out about the launch date or other things.

There's various ways to get an intant community, and it all depends if you have the right ingredients at the right time in order to do it.

Not because you bought a particular forum software. :p

As for that telnet Star Wars movie thing... someone has a lot of time on his hands. :)

Wow, that Star Wars telnet was awesome. I'll be showing that to some of my friends later.

Am I missing something because I don't see a link to any demo anywhere :)?

OMG - that is the stupidest slogan I have ever heard.

First of all, it's a negative statement, it says nothing about what their product is or what it does.

Second of all, if they are taking a shot at vBulletin, that is really lame. I would never do business with a company whose slogan was mocking another company... Give me a break.

My guess is some dimwit thinks he is gonna get rich... :p

Bwahahaha

Gaia Online (http://www.gaiaonline.com/) got MILLIONS of posts within weeks of going live. How the hell that happened, I don't know. The site is two years old and ...

Gaia has 302,771,815 articles posted with 2,188,040 registered users.
Waiting about a minute, and reloading:

Gaia has 302,775,836 articles posted with 2,188,042 registered users.

4000 posts in 60 seconds. Unreal. It makes Something Awful and Off-Topic seem like sleepy backwaters by comparison. Then again, considering the quality of discussion on Gaia, the HUGE signature images, and the queezy feeling one gets when you realize so many users there are junior high school age ... uhh, I'll take my site that has an intelligent post every two or three minutes, thank you.

That's what happens when you combine a forum with customizable cute and shiny anime characters. :p

Instant == 0 time. There are exceptions for brief turnaround times, but what percentage of forums do you think are even successful at all, let alone explosively so?

Originally the argument by you was that no community can instantly establish itself as a leader. Some samples were provided where it has happend.

It is not a question of quantity (or even majority), but just to state the point that it does happen.

Sure was fun! I scared the sh*t out of a BBS operator when I used a pre-release of USRobotics 14.400 modem. He called me back to check wtf was going on. In those days, many had to have the phone number to allow you access to their BBS. They also had networked BBS's with several networks like FidoNet, it was pretty much like Usenet, but you didn't have to be a student to use them.
