So,
If I want to upgrade to 3.5 (once it's gold), I have to make all those template changes listed?
I might as well just revert every template and add the HTML back in again
Will there be any sort of work-around for all the template alterations? I suppose not, but worth a try. :) I know IPB (I'm not trying to *cause* anything) had a template feature where it updated existing templates for me in 1.3 (they have since removed that feature).
Any chance of that or not?

You will need to go though all of the upgrade steps, and you would need to compare your changes from 3.0.7 to the final templates.

what? will there be a way to upgrade the 3.0.4 version of vb to a future 3.5 gold version? I mean: could I preserve only the contents of the post, the attachments, the users etc... but not the template or other modifications of the previous version?
Zachery

Ecron, you will be able to upgrade when you wish to vBulletin 3.5.0, to make your style work on 3.5.0 you will need to modifiy the templates or revert them.

That depends per web site, I also upgraded all my production sites with it because I can afford to run the risk of being down an afternoon because of unknown bug. So far, it has always worked perfectly fine for me and any issue found was resolved within the hour (if not sooner). We do not recommend it, but it is up to you. Perhaps I also upgrade my production forum to find new bugs :p

Sun 19th Jun '05, 7:51am
Ok lets spell it out for those who don't grasp the concept of a beta.
It is an unstable release that has been launched to the masses to iron out any bugs that may remain in the code, Jelsoft can only do so much testing, so may not pick every bug up, so they rely upon the masses of Jelsoft customers to test the software out as well and pick up anything that they have missed in a live environment.
So in no way shape or form are betas considered a stable release just because they've released it to the masses.
So to sum it up:
BETAS HAVE NEVER BEEN AND NEVER WILL BE STABLE RELEASES!!!!
Thank you for listening.

beta test
In software development, a beta test is the second phase of software testing in which a sampling of the intended audience tries the product out. (Beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet.) Originally, the term alpha test meant the first phase of testing in a software development process. The first phase includes unit testing, component testing, and system testing. Beta testing can be considered "pre-release testing." Beta test versions of software are now distributed to a wide audience on the Web partly to give the program a "real-world" test and partly to provide a preview of the next release.
Noun1.beta software - pre-release software that has received an alpha test but still has more bugs than a regular release; "beta software is usually available only to particular users who will test it"

But will the final release of 3.5 be released in 'hack format' for those of us that have made many alterations to our boards?
They won't ever release one THAT way since *officially* Jelsoft doesn't support hacks.
And to be honest, you don't want the current hacks you have in the format they are in for 3.0.7 now anyway...not for the 3.5.0 version. The hacks for the hooks/plugins are SO MUCH easier that you will be astonished. Just install on an unhacked board and go from there. Liz

Part of hacking up a vBulletin (and modifying its code) is knowing that every time there is a major revision of the software, you basically have to do it all over again. I think the hooks - while fairly limited - do wonders for the modification community in enabling those of us who want to have industry standard, stock vBulletins while also having some extra features here and there.

While weeding through all of the questions and answers about when Jelsoft will do this, and when vbulletin will be able to do this, I realized I can not find easy instructions to upgrade from beta1 to beta2 of 3.5.0. I wouldn't imagine having to upgrade all of the files manually, I would hope that there is some sort of upgrade process that replaces the files that need to be replaced, but would I upload the upgrade.php, or upgrade_350b2.php and/or an .xml file?
Please just let me know the easiest way to go from beta 1 to beta 2.
Thanks,
ps. All I did was setup beta1, with myself as the admin, no other users as the software isn't really live, but now I want beta 2 which I've downloaded, but not sure what needs to be done, I don't want to overwrite all of the previous files if that isn't necessary, just a waste of time I would imagine since no changes have been made to any files.

I'm not sure if I like the WYSIWYG editor being in the quick edit. Is this an optional feature?
I think I also liked the double clicking the post better then double clicking the edit button, that's more confusing to to ender users. Buttons are made to be click once.

i rather dislike clicking in the text. It was sometimes difficult to activate. Plus I've often accidently activated someone's post and modified it on the test boards I've been at

Yeah, but they broke it for Opera (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs35.php?do=view&bugid=427). That'll be fixed tho (I hope :p )
So, the new system means WYSIWYG on the quick edit textbox, which can only be opened with a doubleclick on the edit button. Nice.

I read about a new feature last week that puts a separator between threads to show unread threads that were updated since your last visit - I can't seem to find where this was mentioned anymore and I was wondering if this is still working?
I have never had the separator show up for me.

Thanks for your suggestion Zachery, but I'm still having problems. I'm not sure what you meant by "here" (this thread or the forums) but I tried both.
When I searched this thread for "newposts" the only result I got back was the thread itself. When I searched the forum for "newposts" I went to the last page and the top of the results is a post about vB 2.0.
What am I doing wrong?

Nice tightening of some of the code. The new editer is cool too... I don't see much of a difference though. One thing I don't like though is the new double click edit mode... I liked it the way it was before. I used it for quick edits... I don't feel the need for a full fledged editor especially if it increases the time the edit box takes to come up.

You can upgrade from beta 1 to beta 2 without any problems... Just go to /install/upgrade.php (like any other version).
Right, that's what I assumed, and that's what I did, but since the files are all from the beta1, after the successful upgrade according to admincp, everything remains beta1, with no differences or name changes, even after clearing the cache, etc.
Are you sure I don't have to upload any beta2 files at all? So in other words there was no point for me to download beta2 if I had beta1 installed all I had to do is run the install/upgrade.php script?
That completed successfully but as I said no changes noticed, including version.
Thanks in advance everyone..

I liked just being able to click in the text area to load the quick editer, my users a abit thick when it comes to tech stuff so trying to tell them a 2 click opens a quick editer and 1 click opens the main editer will be hard work. could there not just be a quick edit button along with a edit one like with the reply buttons?

To update you need to upload the beta2 files apart from your config file and then run the install/upgrade.php after you have fully run the upgrade and checked its worked fully remove the install folder.

Could we have an options for either double click the post or double click the edit?
Edit: Another thing, I've noticed a dramatic slowdown in the way the post is added when using a quick reply... it's almost as slow as it was without the ajax and with the redirect on a low ping server.
Edit 2: No, sorry ignore my first edit. Must have been having connection problems with vb.com :)

I would say don't waste your time doing template edits until at least an RC version
Then, I am assuming that the templates would have to be edited on each update to keep my current theme intact? I want to install the beta tonight, but not if I am going to have to go to that work each time. (and since I never had to edit the templates once it was installed in 3.05 all the way through 3.07, I dont know how much work it would be to begin with)
The change in the quick reply alone is giving me the itch to upgrade, when I initially planned on waiting until the final release.
Onimua
Mon 20th Jun '05, 10:24pm
There are template changes in from 3.0.7 > Beta 1, and then from Beta 1 > Beta 2 because of changes/add-ons they've been making.
If you're going to do major editing with the templates, it'd be best to wait until Gold. Reason 3.0.5 > 3.0.7 didn't have exmplate changes was because of the fact they were mainly security patches than anything else.

Some template errors have still cropped up, and as what was just stated above, there is still some modifying going on beta to beta. The betas are coming fast and furious, so patience will be of virtue. However, you can install the beta on a closed are of your site and start messing with it and the template system so when the stable versions start coming...not to much should have to be fixed or changed.

Gr8 work indeed! BUT still i think unless and until the end-users cannot see a visual indicator to this facility, the utilization of this feature will be minimal as far as end users are concerned. The visual indicator can be designed in the same way as quick reply small button (on the right hand side of "Quote" button) works on a postbit template i.e. clicking the small button activates Quick Reply Box toawards the end of the thread. Similarly, by putting a small button for Quick Edit alongside "Quote" button (e.g left hand side of "Quote" button) would help end-users in easily finding out about the functionality (out of curiosity on seeing a new small button? ;))...
To make my point clear please have a look at the attachement.
Regards

Our site has a higher visiting readership though few post entries per day (10-20 max atm)
It appears when I go to other 3.5b2 live sites as a visiter that all is working smoothly.
My main concern about going live on our site with the new beta is that it not have bugs that affect the visiting readership - (members who don't post and unregistered visiters)
If visiters aren't affected I would consider going live and let our few posting members be part of the beta program.
Whadya think?

I've given you a reply and explained it. As beta 3 is obvious, at least 1 more. And as 7 is an assumption that it will be too much, you can pretty much do the math that it perhaps is 3,4,5,6 - (4)max.
There is no ETA on beta 3, and no information about future releases beyond that. Asking about it won't change that.
This thread is about the current beta 2 announcement, and not about beta 3 or anything beyond that.

This thread is to discuss the beta 2 announcement. Not anticipate the beta 3 release.

Maybe I have missed something? But I can't seem to copy & paste inside the "reply to Thread"?
I am not sure if their is a better way, but in past if I wanted to quote more than one user I would copy the first quote & then paste it into the next.
Be nice If we had a multiple user quote function.

You have to switch modes. You see the two A's over on the far right hand side of the box? One is for full wysiwyg mode and one is for limited mode (One allows me to use my copy and past button on my mouse, the other doesn't). In full wysiwyg mode, I have to go up to the edit bar and hit the copy and paste there or do something with the control button which I never remembered anyway. I HATE full wysiwyg mode.
I WISH I could keep MINE in limited mode all the time but the danged thing keeps switching back on me here. Liz

ah... So I was missing something. :)
Thanks..
Control C/Control V = ;)
I would still like to see a feature that would make quoting one than one user easier.

Full mode does not allow copy and paste in Firefox because it is a security hazard, but to get around it, as the people said above me, you can still copy + paste using:
Ctrl+X for Cut
Ctrl+C for Copy
Ctrl+P for Paste
:)
