View Full Version : "Mark as Unread" link?

It would be handy to have a Mark as Unread link for threads. At times I view a thread but have to go and dont have time to make a reply. It would helpful to mark it as unread so that I can view at a later date.

I realize we can add a subscription, but that requires too many clicks. I just want a simple solution (perhaps in the Forum Tools menu?) that will just make the thread unread.

I remember thinking this too, but I gave up (too) easily by telling myself I'd add a subscription.

Now that someone else mentions it, I think this should be an option as well, seeing as it shouldn't be difficult technically.

sounds very good to me.

... or at least a "flag for follow-up" option where you can go to as a menu option somewhere and deal with them ...

May I extend this request?

With the new system, if we don't use the "Mark (This) Forum Read" then will always be a bunch of theads marked as unread. There are some threads that we leave unread to read them in the future, but there are some threads that we are not interested in reading them. If these threads are in the same forum, then we can not use "Mark this forum read" because it will mark as read and the threads that we want to read them later. Thus, we have to open the threads that we don't want to read them, just so these threads gets off the "New Posts" list.

I think it would be a nice idea to have a link (text/image) in each thread that could act as an on/off switch for marking them read/unread. That would be handy if it was implemented for forums as well (in the last column of search results).

It could use AJAX the same ways it is used by mods/admins for locking/unlocking threads.

The marking of the threads as read is the easy part... it would be the same way that is used already. The marking of them as unread, I suppose is a bit more tricky to achieve as there is no easy way for it to know which post was the last one that we actually read before marking them as read. In this case, I guess it's enough just to mark the last post unread so the whole thread becomes unread again and thus available through "New Posts".

I don't think that there is the need to have an unread option for the forums. Just a link for marking a forum read from the search results is enough.

I do think this is a worthy suggestion for the future.

Does the "future" mean "after 3.5"?

Yes, that is most likely the case.

:(

I thought that it is something not hard to do, since it is almost the same as locking/unlocking threads.

...but glad that some dev liked it! :D

You have to understand that it is more important to get bugs resolved and other features tweaked before I could go looking at new features and possibly creating more bugs along the way.

The next non maintenance release after 3.5 should feature a much higher percentage of user improvements than 3.5 does.

Just a follow up, since it is "under consideration"... :D

When we view a thread, it could be used the image in the upper left corner of the post for marking the first unread post (e.g. when we have read some posts, but we have to go away so we need to mark the point that we stop reading). Thus, if we click this image then this post will be the first unread post that we will be redirected to (when we click showthread.php?goto=newpost).
Of course this has to use either AJAX, either to redirect us to (e.g.) the parent forum. I mean that it cann't just refresh the page since this would mark this post again as read. The same applies if it is added an option in the thread menu.

We can live until then with some features hacked/pluged in until these features become standard in the stock files. ;)

The next non maintenance release after 3.5 should feature a much higher percentage of user improvements than 3.5 does. Hi Freddie, I had hoped 3.5 itself would have much improvements for our users over 3.0, but that was not really the case, unfortunately. It is really a long time, waiting for more then 1 year for much requested features. So I am very glad to hear now that the next non-maintenance release should fill this gap. Great news: I am looking forward to this all!

1 year is a long time? Wow. I'm used to Photoshop, Quark, etc. where it's 2-4 years per update. After 9 major versions of Photoshop, we still can't customize the toolbar.

vB3.5 set the stage with a new architecture to support add-ons and plug-ins. That was more important than feature creep in my opinion.

I do think this is a worthy suggestion for the future. When will this be implemented? I wasn't able to find it in vB 3.5.1 :(

3.5.x will be maintenance releases (bug fixes), 3.6 will be new features.

So, my forum members (and me too) are all asking for "Mark As Unread" ... any chance this will be in 3.6?

Thanks,
Jay

Not now, it's been "feature frozen".

But it does sound like a very handy concept.

Talk about bumping an old thread :p

I would still love to have something like this...

In some months vB 3.7 will come out but I still can't find this feature. When will it come?

Some of our customers would really appreciate such a feature...maybe something for vBulletin 3.7.1?

I really think this can be helpful... just like the OP, I often read a thread and want to reply but don't have time and have to leave... so something to be able to "Flag for Reply" or "Mark as Unread" would be awesome.

Just today I needed the "Mark this thread as Unread" feature, so I could go away and still find it in the "New Posts" listing to reply to it.
