View Full Version : Use VB As A Doc Sharing Tool?

Lately I've been looking at services like FileTrust.com (http://www.FileTrust.com) and Xdrive.com (http://www.Xdrive.com). I'm not real happy with the pricing I'm seeing.
Has anyone out there used Vbulliten as a file storage/sharing tool? I'm thinking I could set up a group/forum for each client, and let them upload files for me there. Sometimes these files are kinda big. I think 15 MB's is the biggest one I've seen so far.
Any thoughts comments or suggestions?
Thanks.

Seems a little overkill to me, but why not. You can administer how much the users can upload, what kind of files, how many per posting and so on. Lot of possibilities there.

Could possibly be done in vBulletin 3.5 with a plugin.

I'm not terribly worried about download quotas. It's for sharing professional documents, so if Client A wants to to download the legal contract 100 times, they're welcome to.
What about security though? I haven't worked with attachments, or setting up groups before. If a post appears in a forum that is only accessible by a certain group, what happens if someone from that group copy and pastes the attachment link... Could they just send it to anyone?

No they cannot send the link just anyone.
They can pass the link along to a member that can view attachments.
Are you sure you can upload large files? Check your php.ini file.

Yes, I do... I actually have one of my vB licenses set up and used as a Test and Issue Management System. Creative use of the fantastic permissions system and forums setup allows super levels of control for clients.
I have my system users, project team, development team and supplier (comprising individuals from all over the globe) all entering details of User Acceptance scripts (also posted) and posting the results online. Myself (as Project Manager) and the Business Systems Administrator of the newly installed system assign these issues to relevant team members - and this is all set up according to vB permissions.
We share documents of all types, and the whole system works superbly. I have a full audit trail of issues and resolutions etc... exactly what I need...
vB is super!
