hi,
i still using 3.0.7 and will probably move to 3.50 when it is final and ready complete.
Will it override any hacks, or will it do anything to the current hacks/modifications i got?
What is the updates with 3.50? I am not quite a 'coder' or php artist, i checked out the updates and seen some codes changes, but in general, whats the advantages about it because i am currently happy with 3.0.7 and would rather move to 3.50 if its going to benefit me further.. So I'm pretty happy with 3.0.7 and never come across much problems.
Any differences you can compare between 3.0.7 to 3.50. Other than the codes, any differences that users/members of vb3.50 will realise and like?
Cheers.!

Your hacks and modifications are not compatible with vBulletin 3.5.0. They will need to be upgraded by the person that created them.

Not sure if this is answerable but I'll ask anyway. Is there a set amount of beta revisions planned before final release? I know it's not like writing outlines where to have a 1 you automatically need a 2 to validate that level of branching, I'm just curious.

No.. This beta process is planned to be "Quick Fire and Rapid Release". There could be a new release tomorrow if something significant is found or it could be the next release is next week. It depends on what is found, what is fixed, what needs to be refined and what hooks are asked for by modification developers.

Ok, so <takes breath> ... haha. I run http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum . I am very interested in most of the new features, from AJAX, Validating XHTML to fulltext searching. If you take a quick peak at my forum you'll see most of the band sub-forums have their own styles, most based off of one template.
Am I looking at some major work here to get everything up to par with the new features? This will be my first major upgrade with you guys so I haven't been hit with much except a 3.0 > 3.0.3 > 3.0.6 upgrade process. That was pretty effortless. I've learned a lot since using VB but am not 100% up on, for example, the set backs when I revert something, or even exactly what that does (reverting to previous version or.. ?
I just need some sort of idea of what I am looking at work wise, as I want to take advantage of all these new features, but don't want to go in thinking one day if it is going to take a week to edit styles etc. (most the band sub forums have custom header code). If it is major work, if someone could recommend the best way to go about this that would be awesome.
Thanks!

You ran upgrade.php and not install.php correct?
Hopefully, you installed this on your test/development forum and not your live forum and made a backup before attempting the upgrade.

If it is based on one template, then you just have to make the changes listed in the announcement thread. If there are hacks or other changes, then you would have to wait until they are implemented for vBulletin 3.5. Without looking at the coding of your templates and the php code modifications that you have done, there is no way we can estimate what kind of work you have in store for you. For most people the upgrade will be easy and painless.
If you have specific questions, you can ask them in the vBulletin 3.5 How Do I forum. If you have questions about code changes you need to make for addons or hacks, ask them at vBulletin.org.

At this time, no this is not possible. You will have to perform an upgrade. When 3.5 is released as a stable version, an updated version of Impex will be available that will allow this.

With the hooks and all the new 0bject-oriented stuff, it would seem that 3.5 would be a lot less efficient than 3.0.7. Does anyone notice any difference in the way it performs?

Great news -- thanks for all the hard work!! :D
I am happy to hear that you all are going for xhtml-transitional. I have an increasing number of people reading the board via their cell phones.
I just checked the announcement thread for kicks though -- and it is reporting a block line element inside an inline tag for showthread. Glanced at the source, but didn't have time to go through it all to see where this is happening.

No... this error is most likely due to a hack that you installed on your previous version. You will have to remove hacks from your 3.0.3 board to properly upgrade.

These errors are symptomatic that the upgrade script needs some sort of semi-intelligent error checking, eg, don't try to add new columns if the exact same column already exists. Just a note to the Devs... I had the same thing happen on my test-board when a glitch caused the DNS-entry to come back invalid, and it responded to my browser with a server not found. Seems the script still executed its step and when I re-ran it to make sure, there errors were all over the place.

Which index? You can empty the postindex and word tables once you enable Fulltext - I believe that option is presented to you when you make the switch.

Ah, I was under the impression that it would take up LESS space since it's using MySQL search features. It won't find everything that the vB search table found, such as PHP, HDD, MB, etc.
Do I need to reindex for fulltext?
Steve Machol
Fri 10th Jun '05, 3:17pm
Do I need to reindex for fulltext? No. Fulltext does not use the postindex and consequently the db will be smalller.
Freddie Bingham
Fri 10th Jun '05, 3:35pm
The database may not be smaller, just depends on if the fulltext index happens to be larger or smaller than our postindex table was. MySQL will not find any words shorter than 3 characters by default. vB won't find 'MB' either unless you changed the minimum words length to 2. You can also do that with MySQL, but I believe it requires a compile time setting to achieve. If you are using the boolean.
The fulltext search will definately find the word 'PHP' but this is where you have to really consider the needs of your site and the size of the community. If your site is like this one, then the word 'PHP' is going to appear in a lot of posts. Using the boolean search for 'PHP' is going to be resource intensive for such a site. That is why there is also the Natural Language option. It is going to find the posts that it thinks are most relevant with the word PHP - mostly those with the word appearing the most times. It is also going to do it while expending much less resources than the boolean search.
There is no magic bullet when it comes to searching. If you have a large forum then you will probably find the best balance of search features and load stability is going to come from allowing the majority of your users to only use the Natural Language search. They aren't going to get a return of every single post that contains the word but you will still be able to allow them to search instead of needing to disable searches altogether.
We still have the old search code in place if you find that it works best for you, which it may very well do for smaller forums.

How did you shortened the language file ?? Do you have SSH root access to your hosting server? In the members area, there are a number of options while downloading vBulletin... you can download only the xml files... this would reduce you downloaded filesize to below 1.1 mb... if you have SSH access available then try downloading compressed file with tar.gz extenstion. The file size is considerably small and you can then upload the single file into your server using ftp and upcompress it directly on your server through SSH root access... this process is 1000 times faster than uploading all those files using ftp.
You can know more about tar.gz files from the following link --> http://www.hostlibrary.com/easy_domain_migration_new_unix_server.html

do you plan further development of the actual 3.5b1 structure, or wecan start recoding our hacks right now ?!
because i would not like to have to rebuild them later if you decide to reconstruct other parts of the system...

I doubt they plan anything significant in terms of structural changes to code seeing as this out there in beta testing now. I may have dreamed the following (I know they hate putting timetables on anything after 3.0 delays) but I'm sure one of the devs said they were hoping to have 3.5 out as the stable release within a matter of weeks with releatively few beta releases.

Why don't you make graphics you like by yourself?
Good question, but my view is that a package which I pay for should provide me with graphics that at least FIT the overall style.
I may or may not like the total style (colours, layout, graphics), but at least provide a layout with graphics that suite it. I completely agree with all the people who have stated that the VB2 series had better fitting graphics. You might not like the brilliant :p purple colours back then, but at least the overall style was pretty good. It all fitted.
(text below is meant as tongue-in-cheek)
[ meant-to-be-humor-mode-on ]
To me, VB3 is like ordering/buying a great looking BMW. It has this fantastic engine and great overall style. You order this car, just to find out on delivery-day at the garage that it comes with a Pink bumber, an Ultra-purple left/right door-mirror and a Bright yellow door-handle..... would you feel comfortable riding this car? Well.... not really. And then imagine your salesman and technician saying to you: 'well..... if you don't like it, you can paint those parts over by yourself'.

You see my point? I still strongly believe that the default graphics have much room for improvement, according to how they fit in the overall style.
Just my thoughts.
I am very pleased with the VB3 product and service, just a few things that I want to remark on:
- The default graphics don't fit the overall style. Hopefully new/alternative and especially usefull sets will be released. By Jelsoft themselves. I haven´t discovered any usefull graphics-sets by third parties. Apart from the great "Bad Bunny" Emoticons v1 (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81781) smiley-set.
- I was a little disappointed to discover that VB 3.5 didn't have much improved functionality at the user end (although I understand the reasons now more or less). I find waiting for more then a year for much needed new and improved functionality rather a long time. I hope this process can be speeded up for future releases, now we have the basis to support those new features : VB 3.5
Keep up the great work!

Quick question: I already have a vBulletin license for 3.0.x for a particular domain, but am I allowed to try the beta on a different domain (or subdomain) to give it a test run and see how it works? I don't want to run something that's going to be constantly changing for a while on my main site but at the same time I would like to have a play with the 3.5 betas.

Yes, you can have one extra forum installation (provided it's not accessible to the public) on your domain. You would have to purchase another license if you want to have a board on another domain. :)

I've already upgraded my live forums to 3.5.0, having no regrets so far. The only way it can be properly tested, is by being thrown straight into a big usage environment.

Oh? What did IPB do? For example, what kind of changes? I'm curious now that you mention it... :(
This thread is not for IPB discussions, please take the conversation private ;) Thank you.
I have way to many hacks to consider installing before it's out of beta, but I'm interested in how 3.5 beta 1 has affected server load with those that have installed. I certainly can't afford to take on additional load, and if this release decreases load it will be most welcome. Thanks!
Server load did not increase on my sites. And actually, I've noticed a drop. But have to wait for a longer period of time to really have a good average.
Has anyone upgraded to vBulletin 3.5.0 Beta 1 and had no problems whatsoever? Or very little problems?
I'm desparate to upgrade, but don't wanna f*** up my forums.... :(
No need to swear.
Yes, I have upgraded all my forums and they're all working great.
No, I have not experienced any showstoppers and users did not complain.
Note: you can test on your localhost with a backup of your live- database to see if upgrade would give you any problems.
It should have a bunch of bug fixes. :)
It will at least have the fixed bugs. ;)

Yeah, I run vB 3.5 beta 1, and there are only minor bugs.. And also, it's on the features that some members don't even know about.

Do styles for vB 3.0.x work for 3.5?
Also, I need some advice on when to upgrade to the latest version. I have around 30 hacks installed for 3.0.7... do those just get erased automatically?

Yep, since every file is completely overwritten to accomodate the new changes. You're going to either reinstall them (and probably edit them to work wit hthe new code) or wait for a Plugin version.
As for styles... they work for the most part. You have to edit some templated here and there to get them to work fully, but for the most part they work. :)

What about the hacks that edit database? What happens to the hack tables, edited columns? Do they get erased or transferred?

Also. Will there be an easier skinning system. Thats why im still with IPB because my designer wants to charge me like 30$ more to skin for vB because its too hard. Thanks!:D

I tried the IPB skinning and it seemed much mreo difficult to me. Maybe mroe extensive or easier for heavily gfx people. But yeah..you mgiht wanna look into that urself ot be a mreo educated consumer.

No all my friends say the same thing. IPB is alot easier and vB is extremely hard do to a bad template bit layout and stuff. I forget what else they said.

Good plan. Saves you the trouble of thinking for yourself. What exactly do your comments have to do with this beta release again? I can do without the IPB infomercial.

Im suggesting an easier template system so that I can switch to vB and my designer wont charge me alot of extra money for the the "hard to work with template system" that ive been talking about.
FASherman

Define 'easier'. I use both and don't find VB3 to be any harder to work with or understand. Its just different. Maybe the problem is your designer doesn't want to learn a second system. Most of us design our own styles. Say it with me now... STYLES... not skins.

... how "hard" is it? You're not necessarily missing with direct CSS from scratch, and the templating system is rediculously easy. I would pay more to have a design done in IPB than vBulletin.
But this thread is not about discussing IPB, now is it? I would say take it into a private thread, or mention this in the 3.5.0 Feedback and Suggestion forum.

so am I to assume that ppl that do not use the default skin are SOL? How are we supposed to figure out what needs to be changed in templates if we don't use the original? We just need to wait and hope the makers of the skin release an upgraded version of their skin for 3.5?

If you do not use the default skin try makngi your own. It isn't that tough really..just takes about an hour to make a decent one.
I wil lbe re-releasing my two public skins for free whenever vb 3.5.0 final is released. (The 2.0 versions should be shiny sicne we're gongi to try soem new stuyff.;)) Not that anyone really uses mine right now.

Not entirely SOL...I have released Steel Blue for 3.5 BETA.
Currently it is sitting in the submission queue here, but it's available from vbt... http://www.vbulletintemplates.com/mods/showthread.php?t=8113

Well i can give you around 30 :) We have staff that own vB and IPB, and they all use vB now on there main site, and make styles for our databases. And ourselfs..... well we must have been the 2nd most know site for IPB styles online, and we also can say that vb is just as easy, the differece your designer is having is that items are called different parts, and there more to style, as there is so much more extra on vB.
Its NOT harder, just different :)
