Changing database and adding features

Would it be possible to add a text field to users on vB to record keywords - so then users receive an email if any post is added with any of these keywords.(I think adding a field is a standard feature?)

Also can the downloads of files be recorded against each user.

So I would need to build something that trawled through all posts and emailed users based on keywords, and I would need a new table (possibly) to record user downloads. Are these possible?

Once I have vB can I amend the database and webforms to do anything I want?
