How do I add avatars?

I dont know how to work the avatars. I dont even see an option for them. Are they even used in ver. 1.1.4.?

Or is there a hack for them I need to do?

Avatars are in 2.0 -- or you can use the 1.1.x hack (assuming it's still being distributed).
