Hi,
i just bought out a forum site that uses owned vBulletin. But the previous owner is not transferring the vB license to me, so i will need to get a new vB license.
after i buy a new vB license, do i need to reinstall the vBulletin forum again or is there anywhere i can change the license info. Hopefully i dont need to reinstall the whole forum due to changing of license info.
Thanks.

Simply overwrite your own files onto the old files, and add your info into the members area. That's it :)

Should be mentioned not to over write config.php -- unless that needs to be written over?
In that case I'd transfer the information in config.php that's on the server (the database name, password, etc.) onto the one you wish to transfer it to and upload that.

but there are hacks in the forum, by overwriting the files will cause problems.
is there anyway to just change the license info without reinstalling the whole forum and without reapplying the hacks and template.

You can't overwrite config.php directly unless you rename config.php.new to config.php :)

Since there are hacks, you should use a software like Beyond Compare and compare the two files, and carry the hacks over http://images.vbulletin.com/images_vb3/smilies/smile.gif

never know that changing of license number is so troublesome :(

you dont really have to overwrite everything... all you really have to do is replace the customer number in the files with your new one..

Then again you'll most likely want to upgrade once vBulletin 3.5 is available. I'd do the whole thing then and just leave the files as they are at the moment.

I say, just wait until you upgrade next to change the license keys in the files. Providing you have a valid license for your domain where vB is installed, you will be fine.

Couldn't you just use the find/replace function in DreamWeaver? (If you don't own it you can get the trial). It will let your find and replace whatever you want within an entire folder at a time...

I remembered reading somewhere that replacing the files is not as important as making sure the URL in the members area is up to date.

Yeah I read that too... Can't remember where though.

It is the licensekey that is important wich you "validate" for your website by entering the url in the member area.
The license info in the php files is not that important.
I would wait till your next upgrade (if you want to do one).
But maybe a staff member should clarify this matter ;)
