How do I change the first column background color?

I would like the first and second column on my subforums to be white and then alternate between grey and white. I have used the modify style option to create alternating colors but if I use this feature I get grey - white - grey - white - grey - white. But what I want is white - white - grey - white etc. I have seen many other boards do this successfully but I can't figure out how to override the setting for the first subforum column individually. Can someone help me? Thx.

Just edit the forumdisplay_level2_post template and change the first { firstaltcolor } (spaces added for display) to { secondaltcolor } or however you want it to display.
