I understand you all want to speculate, but everybody who just wants to read about the dev status things .. have to crrrraawl through many pages of 'today/tomorrow/never' stuff that is not getting anywhere anyway until it is actually released.

The dev announcement has a lot of features listed, did you all try those yet (where possible)? And there are even more features you can find out about like the PM name suggestions (which is also on advanced search btw) and getnew showing 0 results will link to getdaily as additional option. And double clicking on a post will allow you to edit and many more little things. There is a test forum where you can try all that out, and browse around and find more fun changes.

So since vB2 only made it to 2.3.6 (?), any plans for vB4? What version did 1.x get up to, for that matter.

2.3.7*

I can't remember the 1 series but I don't think it ever made 1.5

I think they're doing this big a version jump because although there is all the new AJAX and hooks/plug-ins and everything it still maintains a lot of the 3 series core, however the changes are halfway to warranting a full version jump xD

Hence the 3.5.x'ness of it all.

Any plans for vB4? Christ let them finish 3.5 first. You lot don't half like to work them with your "where's my 3.5/CMS/whatever!!? I want it now!" xD

Well they said days last week, not weeks. If it's not out tonight then you can classify it as weeks.... I think. :|

No, they would technically have until just before the 2-week mark. 13 days is still "days" not "weeks". ;)

Stupid question, but coming from 3.03 with several hacks (I honestly can't even remember which ones I have, they were all installed to solve specific problems at the time), will I be able to upgrade to 3.5?

Bad_i_BILL
Wed 8th Jun '05, 1:44pm
Where do we KNOW???

What I mean is I am growing tired of the runaway topic & checking it repeatidly. :(
Specifically where can the members look to see when 3.5.0 is availiable to DL?
Will we recieve an email?

Stupid question, but coming from 3.03 with several hacks (I honestly can't even remember which ones I have, they were all installed to solve specific problems at the time), will I be able to upgrade to 3.5?

Yes, but the hacks will most likely be incompatible with 3.5 and might need some reworking. Though it is probably likely that you'll have to run all the upgrade scripts to upgrade to 3.0.7 and then on to 3.5.0

Specifically where can the members look to see when 3.5.0 is availiable to DL?
Will we recieve an email?

The thing in the top right hand corner that says 3.5.0 Preview should change to 3.5.0 BETA, then you can go into your members area and go to the download vBulletin section and it will be there for download.

I daresay Jelsoft will e-mail all customers when it's released but until then all you can do is check back every so often to see whether it's available or not.

Just a suggestion... since you have fixed the Sent PM issue so now we can move our Sent PM's to a folder, is there anyway you could add in to sort with a click. I seem to remember in vB2 I could do that. Right now I have 984 PMs in my Sent box just waiting to go into the proper folders, (I keep everything), so I thought I might ask if that is a possibility. Thanks. :)

They've never emailed customers for a beta release before, only the final release that I can recall - so you probably will not get an email.

ok so it's going to go.. 3.5.0 BETA > 3.5.0 Final? Or are there going to be gold versions like with 3.0?

Wayne Luke
Wed 8th Jun '05, 4:58pm
Gold is something that people have assigned to final releases. It comes from manufacturers like Microsoft and IBM, placing their software on gold plated CDs for release to manufacturing. Final Release = Gold... There is no step between the two.

At the risk of pissing people off, I'd suggest in these threads after a prominent notice on the first post saying what type of comments are ok and what would be deleted, that a moderator then deletes all irrelevant posts. 32 Pages of when will it be released is unmanageable and a waste of time. I'm sure if you delete the first bunch less and less people would write those time wasters.

With all the time questions and comments, I'm afraid my PM sorting question got overlooked. :( I'm just so happy to be able to sort the Sent PMs soon, it would save me a heck of a lot of time by being able to sort them by name. If not, there's always the future. :)

LOL!

Replies like "Soon. Sooner than you think" and "It won't be posted on Tuesday" certainly didn't help keep the discussion on topic (what is the exact topic to be discussed? Kier made an announcement?) :D

For Jelsoft, those posting about when every 10 minutes creates a definite sense of anticipation - probably why posts haven't been deleted or this thread shut down :D

I know it's keep me coming back way more than usual :D

Cheers,

Too much anticipation can make for a bad experience if things do not live up to your expectations or do not function the way you envisioned. Do what I do (except for this post), read occasionally, and get it when it IS released. Out...

By the looks of the bug tracker, it seems to me like they're letting other vb sites like vb.org test it out for a while first to iron out admin panel bugs and such that we haven't had access to before releasing.

Wed 8th Jun '05, 6:58pm
well, I do have to agree that saying "early june" and "days not weeks", then saying "sooner than you think"... doesn't make people any less ancy to get it.

Just what do you expect? If you dont want people to get ancy about it, dont say SOON and dont even give an estimate of when it might be out. It seems that everytime there is an iminent release, this exactly thing happens, you let everyone down and then when it does come out everyone is already over the anticipation.

I guess I am starting to doubt a release anytime soon...
The thing is though, this is the Development Discussion thread, not the Release Date Theorising thread.

We are all (apparently) Forum Admins here. Could we not just respect the fact that the vb devs have given us this tasty preview and discuss its development? Continually pestering them to release it (or confirm a release date) isn't nice, and isn't what this thread is designed for.

*steps in and pushes everyone aside* Sorry but I have a real question now, will 3.5 have a style plugin system or is the plugin system for hacks the only type of plugin system that will be in this version?

I ask cuz if it won't exist then I plan to make a hack that will do just that. Will take time but hopefully it will be worth it.

I guess I have a somewhat related question, as well. When applying a hack, will modifications to the templates still be necessary, or will everything be done through the plugin system?

You can upload a Style by uploading an XML file. If the style is created properly, then you can upload a folder /style####_images/ with a 4 digit ID for the style and all the subfolders under that.

Depends on the hack/plugin but I would assume that most will require template modifications to show the results of what you are adding.

This shouldn't be an issue though as templates are not overwritten during upgrade and there is an inline compare feature as well as being able to store template drafts or revisions.

*raises hand*

I noticed with the tachy goes coventry (in 3.0.7), some usergroups can see the "the administrator has decided that this user should be quiet" message. Will this be changed to where only certain usergroups can see this? I dont know if it has been mentioned before, but users who were on this list before have found out from other users. I would rather them not know. I was actually using that feature instead of banning until someone mentioned that they could see it.

Not sure if this has been asked, and if so, disregard:

Will there be any significant changes between the beta and RC/Gold releases? I mean.. I remember ages ago when vB3 was still in beta, it looked a bit similar to vB2, but as we got to the RC stage, the current style was in place, along with other features. While I don't expect too much in terms of how future versions may look, I was curious on whether or not we'll see any changes (other than bug fixes and whatnot) between the beta and RC/Gold releases ;)

... because nothing is concrete? Today (techincally yesterday), they could have been releasing it, but then they discovered the login/out bug, and thus had to find the error, repair ir, implement it into the site, test to make sure it works, and then update any/all files that need it. So... another delay.

I'd be happy if a dev just came on and said "sorry for the delay, but we're working on getting out before <date here of this week, hopefully>". That way we have general idea of what's going on, and know a rough time when to expect it.

There is, in the announcement.

And Then The Big Question...

So naturally you want to know when you can have all these goodies running on your own server?

If our current schedules pan out, we are hoping to have vBulletin 3.5 running the vBulletin.com forums next week, and if that goes well, we will release vBulletin 3.5 to public beta by early June.

That is a general timeframe.

Could off ? the login/out isn't the only thing being worked on, that just came out of the blue as bugs do. Did Kier say it was being released yesterday ?

You can set a reason that will be shown to the banned user so they can see why they have been banned now.

So they then have to fix any critical bugs in the important 24 hours after the release at the weekend? Interesting logic there.

I wonder how much time the previous announcements took him...

well he's got to post saying about the new stuff in it and then list all the files and temp's that have been edited and if you need to reset them or not so taking in mind its a big update is post will be very big also due to the number of edits.

than you had to daily update your forum.
They try to fix as much bugs as possible for the next beta release not for every bugfix a new beta ;)
