Well my liquidweb v Ev1Servers thread has closed. So let's make sure not to go off topic in this one and not to flame.
I think it's more appropriate to compare ThePlanet to EV1. Their prices are almost identical. They both focus on having a topnotch network and leave the sysadmin to others. So does anyone have a server at both? Which company is better?

When I was first looking at servers it seemed impossible to actually get the server you wanted from EV1....

I was with EV1 (even in the Rackshack days) at one time and I had no trouble with them and all my support issues were fixed fast. The customer service was excellent as far as I am concerned and their network was really stable as well. Then it came to the point where I outgrew my server and needed to upgrade and like Zachery said I could not get the server I needed. They either have a ton of customers that simply don’t leave (if this is true that would tell you a lot about customer satisfaction) or they just don’t have enough servers. I then had no choice but to go with the planet and again I am very satisfied with them. I don’t think you would go wrong with either one of these host providers.

The Planet sounds really good. From looking around it looks like at least for me, the most attractive provider is one who gives you a method to "customize" your server rather than forcing their own configuration on you. You say how you want it with a fair number of options, it tells you the price. If they don't have an interface for you to do that you feel like you're forced into something.

Hey, but the drama was good wasn't it. ;)
The competition between EV1 and TP is probably going to sink EV1. It's because TP/SM have a plan customers like -- they pick from a range of settings what they prefer, and tell TP how they like the default install setup; and because TP offers so much and isn't doing the nickel and dime bit (plus they don't charge the TX taxes, which EV1 does to *everyone* who buys a server there -- that extra $18/mon or so for a $250/mon server adds up). And it also seems, TP has the capital to grow -- so the company is going to be around for awhile.

I have used both EV1 (rackshack) and servermatrix/theplanet. I am much happier with the quality of the network and machines at theplanet than at EV1. Your individual experience may be different.... but I will stick with theplanet for my server needs. :)

Very happy with The Planet (and ServerMatrix lineup). More customization options than EV1, though I might pick up a server at EV1 later on so I don't have all servers at 1 datacenter.

Hi all,
Im struggling to find prices for shared hosting at the planet.

You will have to use a host that uses theplanet to get shared hosting. There is a good variety of hosts using theplanet, ask lots of questions and get comfortable with one or two and make a decision.
