I've just noticed the increasing storage counter on GMail's homepage. Is this some kind of April 1st joke? The storage capacity shown at the bottom of the pages in my account have increased too.

They announced GMail (1GB) last year on April 1st, all the world thought that it was a joke, but it wasn't actually. :p

Actually, i see how the counter works. As the counter progresses up, that is how much storage space you will have in your inbox.
By 11:59PM PST, everyone will be at 2048MB :)

Haha! That's pretty awesome :p Although I doubt they can offer us unlimited space :p

Just hit 2051. It stopped counting for me earlier at 2000, then I noticed my inbox had 2050. And now the counter's at it again. How high are they actually planning on going?
Its counting much slower than before.

I understand that, but I don't understand their statement: "As we are able to".
Yesterday it was below 2000 mb, and now above, and it keeps fluctuating...why is this?

"Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able."
Are they implying that they intend to grow our space well above 2GBs as they get the opportunity to? For example, within the next year we can have up to 4GBs if they get that opportunity?

Probably. I'd assume they could reasonably allow for up to 10 GB, and even more, because I doubt very many people even have over 100 MB.
The web space isn't fluctuating, its a very linear growth, aside from the slowdown after 2000.

I noticed it wasn't fluctuating after I logged out and saw the counter! Lol, I thought my mind as playing games on me when I refreshed gmail page and it went up (I guess I assumed it went down as well).
That is really cool. So do they plan to keep going up?

Apparently they want to get it as high as they can (I think they're shooting for infinity :p)
It's at 2055 MB now

As well as impressive technical people, they have some flipping good PR people at Google. Not many companies can generate the headlines they continually seem to do.

Agreed. I guess when you are as mainstream as Google, when you get a request to print a release in your newspapers, you would go along.

The only bad part is what information do you store on GMail, that you wouldn't mind if it was deleted? Most of the stuff I have saved, I'd be upset if it was just gone or deleted, and thats why it is saved or else I'd just open it up and then delete it.

You can invite yourself for example 50 times, that would be 50x2GB space, cluster that and you got yourself a free internet computer :)
2059 mb right now. Does this mean that April 2006 we will have 3gb? :) And when can we get some statistics about their gmail accounts - I mean, if the majority uses 1mb used space they can even give us 1tb storage space :P

I use it as my junk account. If I don't want to give one of my real e-mail accounts I use this one and delete most everything from it once in a while.

I'll consider using GMail as another harddrive so to speak, but the fact is I just can't be worried about losing crucial information, if GMail ever 'improves' and I can't connect anymore.

But we all know there is no such thing as 'unlimited' storage don't we? ;) That statement alone should put anyone off their services!
