Because i'm sick of the hacking attempts and successes that have been running rampid in the phpbb community!

Long time user of phpbb (and even supporter) but i'm sick of it now. I've always used vbulletin forums from the member standpoint and have always liked the functionality.

Now right now hosting everything in house. My site is www.upstatenyriders.com (http://www.upstatenyriders.com) - fairly small but growing quickly.

The machine i'm going to be using is a dual p2 - 300 with 512 ram. This should be adequate temporarily. I plan on upgrading to a p4 based server when I move the site over to a dedicated 10MBps Fiber connection.

Right now the server is setup with Windows 2k/php 4/mysql/apache. I want to switch to Linux. So i'm just wondering. What's recommended here for a distribution? I've always used Slackware.

I plan on using my computer as a temporary home for my site and getting the server wiped/reinstalled with a linux distro/and vbulletin running tomorrow.

Havn't bought my license yet but i'll do that tomorrow. I've been unemployed for 2 months up to yesterday so I can't swing the new server yet.

Think that'll be adequate? Or should I stick it out with phpbb until I can swing the new server and vbulletin together?

Also to add... i'm going to be converting from 2.0.11 with a category hierarchy mod. I'm ok with losing attachments. I just want to keep users and posts and hopefully forum layout.

Hey Zac:

Welcome to vBulletin! Your forum is pretty decent size, but from what I've observed, a lot of sites have grown ten-folds over a month period, so probably expect the same. But from past experiences, vBulletin should be able to handle that load on your current server specs and not cause your server to break a sweat.

I'm not familar with the category hierarchy mod, but I know the current importer does allow you to import phpBB attachments.

Feel free to check out all the details on the phpBB (2.0.4 - 2.0.11 MySQL and MSSQL)) (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=657606&postcount=2) importer for vB 3.0.7.

The current recommended server requirements are basically PHP 4.3.10 and MySQL 3.23.33.

Anyhow, best of luck on your purchase! Hopefully I've been of some assistance.

Just purchased my license! Wish me luck - i'm sure i'll have plenty of questions.

edit:

some members are helping me with some of their old computer equipment. Going to be running an Athlon 1900 / 512 ram to start. Should be a lil bit quicker then the previous setup.
