how much does it cost to run your own server?
and what do you need?

Thats subjective.
What sort of server do you want?
The out of pocket cost is at the very bare mininum about 100 a month US. and goes quite faslty up from there to anything up to almost 1000+ a month.
I have a Dual Xeon with 2 SCSI Drives and 2GB of ram + 2000GB of Datatransfer.
So... That would be overkill for a small board that isn't growing much, but might be perfect for a board that is growing a high rate, at least untill tehy are ready to split to a dual server setup.

just a mid range server that I can run myself... not a dedicated server from lets say The Planet...
Dual Xeon 2.2 ghz+
at least 2x 80 GB HD
fast connection :p
at least 1 Gig RAM

Well any dual processor server is going to cost more money
Multiple harddrives tend to cost more money
And considering you want two processors and two hard drives thats an awful small ammount of ram.

hah.
Much more expensive then renting one, assuming you already have a system that is ready for the task.
You need a line that is capable of serving the number of people online.
a business cable package may be enough as long as you have at least 1mbit up. as your down speed won't matter as much.
But if you do not have a system ready yet. At least a 2ghz machine, not a low end processor, harddrives, SCSI over SATA, and SATA over IDE.

doesnt sound too bad... Comcast has a 4 Mb connection for $55/mo and a 3 Mb connection for $45/mo and thats residential.... and I am getting a PC soon... and it will be a long time until I even do what I might do.... :p
also to use CPanel and WHM in a hosting enviroment does it cost anything? Thanks for your help so far...

A stright out license for life is 1500 (IIRC)
Thats down, you need up. my own connection is 4mbit down, but only 512kbit up.

Depending on how busy your site is, 1MB up would be fine. I would look at local ISPs for future sake just incase comcast does not have a package that will work. You are also going to have to request a static IP unless you want to mess with dynamic DNS updates

I would consider either TP (Server Matrix), Ev1, or LT.

Except... Comcast upload speed on the 4 meg package is 368 kilobit up, which will give you enough speed to send files out at a blazing 35-40 KBps, and thats total. Anyway, its on Comcast's TOS that you cant run webservers. actually I think its "servers of any kind" but webservers definetly apply. Then you still have other factors to consider. Do you have redundant 3 phase power at your house? How about redundant cooling systems? do you have enough parts to replace any failed in your system? It doesnt seem like you've done much research.
It seems like their are all to many people now adays who just say, Oh those people are making money webhosting, thats what I should do! without doing any research of any kind, or knowing how to do it. I'm amazed that people will even think of hosting others when they dont know basic linux command line.

I dont know if you noticed or not but I have decided just to stick with dedicated servers and reseller packages offered by companies ;)

Don't get some reseller package, that doesn't promote that you are serrious about anything. and there will be at least 4 other resellers craming users on the same server you are on.

Thanks for your concern though :)Do you really think, though, that any potential customers would be willing to put up with the performance of a server connected via a Comcast home connection?
