I am all updated on a seriously HACKED vB here  (http://www.makeuptalk.com/forums/)
Thanks guys
No upgrade and you do not see it. Simple as that. It is put there to keep you updated on releases so you are not vulnerable

The part I hate most about upgrading is that I have to go and look for the darn member ID and password. I can never remember them.

I wonder how some people are upgrading.
I have:
c:\Sachs\vBulletin\vBulletin3 CurrentVersion
c:\Sachs\vBulletin\vBulletin3 3.0.6
c:\Sachs\vBulletin\vBulletin3 3.0.7
First, I do a Windows search for all files modified since Jan 19th in CurrentVersion.
Then I use UltraEdit's compare feature to see what Jelsoft changed between those files in 3.0.6 and 3.0.7 and make the same changes in CurrentVersion. Then I drag and drop the rest of the 3.0.7 files right on top of CurrentVersion.
End Result = CurrentVersion is 3.0.7.
The only tricky part for me is the templates. It is inadequate to have a "Show Updated Templates" because that doesn't let me compare virgin 3.0.6 to virgin 3.0.7. So for now, I am manually opening up both versions of vbulletin-style.xml, copying the relevant template out of each file, and then doing a Compare.
What a pain. :)
I wish Jelsoft would let us upload older versions of vbulletin-style.xml and add a rudimentary ability to view older template versions.
I will probably write a Template Browser in PHP that can parse different copies of vbulletin-style.xml and spit out the 2 versions of the template I want.

I think some people are confused about the options being presented here.
There is a security patch, which fixes the stated problem. Separately, you can upgrade to vb3.0.7 which is a snapshot of vB3 with all bugs fixed since 3.0.6 plus some little features added. If all you want is a secure board, you didn't have to upgrade since 3.0.2, just apply patches.
Unless people have a LOT of hacks, I think people are wasting a lot of time if they start with a virgin 3.0.7 and apply all their hacks. I would analyse 3.0.6 -> 3.0.7 changes (only in the affected files) and overlay those changes on their customized boards.
In other words, instead of rehacking a virgin 3.0.7 (hours of work), just make the same changes Jelsoft did to get 3.0.6 to be 3.0.7.

What makes what you suggest difficult is the fact that every single file gets updated with the version number change. It is so annoying. I do have a tip to help you with your template issue. Turn on debug. Then create a folder called "template_dump" in your forums directory. Then chmod it to 777. Then go to http://www.yourforum.com/yourforumsdirectory/admincp/template.php?do=createfiles&dostyleid=1
You will then have a copy of each template in a file and you can stick it in beyond compare or which ever prog you use.

What makes what you suggest difficult is the fact that every single file gets updated with the version number change. It is so annoying.
Which is why I am not using the difference between 3.0.6 and 3.0.7 to create the list of files to check but the difference between 3.0.6 and CurrentVersion.
Then, I Beyond Compare just those files.
...You will then have a copy of each template in a file and you can stick it in beyond compare or which ever prog you use.
Ah. Didn't know about that!
I've created a little tool (http://www.feldoncentral.com/forumpics/vb3templatebrowser/) (thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131252)) for browsing vbulletin-style.xml files and displaying the templates from 2 different versions of vB3 at the same time. Given more time, I could probably make it highlight the code changes.

Patching is just that, you are fixing the leak.
You did not upgrade however. Upgrading requires uploading all of the new files, overwiriting the old ones. Then running upgrade.php
As well as the seucirty fix you also get other bug fixes between 3.0.6 > 3.0.7

You are not updating all the files just patching that one file.
You need to log into the Members Area and download all the files and upload the new files over the existing ones.
Then you need to run the upgrade script found at http://www.yoursite.com/forumfolder/install/upgrade.php

Not sure if this has been said before, but how about e-mailing us when a new a patch is being worked on?? I imagine it takes a few days from when you start fixing something, to releasing a patch.
Ideally everyone would update every version, but sometimes its not possible. That way I and other users would know wether or not to update i.e. Saturday , or wait a few days longer for a new patch. Dunno if that makes sense :s:)
Thanks for the patch. :)

Sat 5th Mar '05, 9:23pm
I wasn't making that as a general comment. I was specifically referring to the circumstances as stated by Spinzone.
He made a particularly unintelligent comment to the effect that if vB continued to act quickly and responsibly to security threats, they would lose customers.
I replied that the only people who would leave for those reasons would be stupid ones.
The logic is reasonably self-evident, and I stand by my response as a result.
how you question my intelligence is beyound me because if saying what i feel that if vb makes end users life difficult then sure enough people would consider leaving i am not saying why they bring out updates but if software was made secure enough in the first place then we wouldnt need updates.

There's no such thing as making a product like this "secure enough". Have you not figured this out by now?
If you think it's so easy, you do it. Otherwise, stop complaining.
As to the end users - the point was that if they leave because vB is doing exactly what they should be, which is keeping their software secure, than they're not leaving for an intelligent reason.
This is part and parcel of what it takes to run a board. If you're not up for it, than shut down.

Are you sure you re-hacked phpAds back in correctly?
I think you're missing an opening or closing table tag or maybe have too many.
I ran your page thru the <A href="http://www.w3c.org/">W3C Validator</a>. Usually it generates so many nuisance warnings as to be completely useless for finding HTML problems. But in this case, it confirmed my suspicion. You have hacked your front page incorrectly and have the wrong number of table tags. The most obvious sign of this is that at the end of the page, you have two sets of </body></html>.
Someone will be along shortly to say:
Hacked boards are not supported
If you are having trouble with the upgrade, open up a trouble ticket or post a new thread under Troubleshooting

I know that Netscape 4 was bad about displaying NOTHING if you had 1 table tag missing. Firefox is more forgiving, but I think he's got serious problems with that page.
Firefox is not a mail client. Maybe you are thinking of Thunderbird? And why are you reading Gmail on something other than Gmail's website?

I don't think it's getting bloated at all. From what I see they're always optimizing whatever code they can in every release they make :)
If by bloated you mean too many features, that's nothing to worry about either because you either use them or you don't. Just turn them off in the adminCP

I agree, even if it has 5 million+ features, you have an option to turn each feature on or off - and the power of vBulletin lies in that. You can tweak the software to match your site and site activity and most features even have extra options so you don't only have on or off. I know enough bbs systems that only have it on or off and don't come with any options at all.

Bloated? I just need more! :) More options! More improved options! :)
I find most (not all : but they can be improved in the future) of the options/settings not difficult to manage, but then again... I almost live inside VB3 nowadays.... ;) I can understand that for an admin new to VB3 it might be overwhelming indeed. There's a learning curve, because you're right... it IS almost 'like an operation system' at times... there's a reason why your account is called 'Administrator'.... ;)

I remember when I first made the transition from IPB and PHPBB and was like "Woah" at all the features and control I had over the forum. Not to start a fight or anything, but I always felt that IPB's admin interface was a little difficult to navigate and when I saw vB's, it was sooooo much easier and more FUN to run a forum because everything is RIGHT THERE for you to control and tweak to your liking.

This is why versioning numbers should not be there by default. Others are removing version numbers from the footer VB should too. Only the admin needs to know what version it is. It shows him in the admin panel.
Footer version needs to be removed.
Thanks for all the hard work guys. Keep up the great work.
true in essence. phpBB has recently gone this route. A few other scripts I have used in the past have done the same due to security reasoning. I personaly think the version info should be to the admins only as well but I think that view is 50/50:)

Nope the upgrade script doesnt deal with any of the main files. Just modify the files like you had the old ones upload them then run the upgrade script. I do it this way everytime.

Because you didn't upgrade to 3.0.7; you just installed the patch to 3.0.6.

Well it happened. My forum got hacked and was down for 3 hours. I was probably like a lot of you guys and didn't want to take the time to upgrade my forum. I had a ton of modifications and thought it would be too much work. Well a hacker changed my mind. I learned two lessons here. I wouldn't put a ton of modificaitons on your forum. In this era of hackers their will probably be a continuous amount of updates. Second backup your forum religiously. I was lucky that this kid was a script hacker and didn't really know what he was doing. He had access to my root directly and didn't change anything but the index.html. Or he was a "nice" hacker. Which is hard for me to believe. Anyway, don't take the risk like I did. Update your board. These hackers are searching for forums using the old versions. Which is extremely easy to do. They will find you.
Also how to do the hack is being discussed on at least one board that I know off. I'm not going to post the link for fears that someone might use the information for the wrong purposes.

At the very least, ALWAYS apply the patches. It requires replacing just 1 or 2 files for each version.

I liked VBulletin so much that I went ahead and bought a 2nd license this one is owned versus the lease that is up this november. I will be running the leased version on another site and perhaps with donations permitting I can then upgrade that one to fully owned. I just needed a 2nd one for my many sites and this software (VBulletin is certainly the top notched BB software it claims to be.)
When is the next major release coming up?

"many sites"?
Do you plan to run more than one instance of the Owned license?
That's not allowed, you realise?
Alex Norton
Mon 4th Apr '05, 5:50pm
Many sites.. as in Many domain names pointing to the site (for their keyword use) and I have two domains that I am using. SO I wanted 2 VBulletins. My error in how I typed it out. One will be using the lease until it expires and the other will be using the owned Licensed version.
Sorry for the way I typed it out.

Hello Alex,
Thank you for the kind feedback and for your continued interest in the vBulletin forum software. We appriciate customer feedback as that helps us improve customer services and of course our products. I will make sure the developers hear about it.
Unfortunatly I can't give an estimate regarding the next version. But it looks like development is going forward and that is always a good thing. I am sure over time, or perhaps in the near future more details will get out. But even if I or others from staff knew anything we can't say just yet. Enjoy 3.0.7 as it is now and just know it can only get better :)

Have you installed hacks, major template changes, etc.? If so, upgrading will take caution. If not, it should be a piece of cake.
Remember: Backup! And not with the Backup feature in the Admin CP. Use a real backup script.

Back up everything. If you have hacks you should be keeping a log of what you need to do to the new version. If you have no hacks or mods it really is simple. Just follow the upgrade instructions.

Almost everyone one of these 3.0.x releases has been completely unplanned. When a security flaw is discovered, Jelsoft rushes out another 3.0.x release to deal with the problem. The added benefit is Jelsoft is always fixing bugs and adding little features as they go. So when they release a 3.0.x version, in addition to the security fix, it also includes any new goodies in the CVS version they've been working on behind the scenes.
An interesting aspect to 3.0.7 is that they had already started working on 3.1 (which will have several new features) so when a security flaw was discovered then, they had to do a lot of shuffling around of features to get as many features as possible into 3.0.7 to make it a worthwhile upgrade.

Please use this thread to discuss the release of vBulletin 3.0.7.
Do not use this thread to report bugs, as it's likely they will be missed. If you believe you have found a bug, please file a report in the Bug Tracker (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs.php).
Also please do not post support requests here, these should be posted in the Support Forum or open a support ticket.

My forum hasn't been upgraded for ages. it's still 2.2.7. I just bought the new license and it says "to upgrade, the forum should be at least 2.2.9".
So how do I go about upgrading from 2.2.7 to 3.0.7?
Do I have to upgrade from 2.2.7 to 2.2.9 first? and how? The 2.2.9 is not available for download. I download 2.3.7, and there is no readme file.
Thank you.
Steve Machol
Wed 13th Jul '05, 3:06pm
You need to download version 2.3.7, then run each of the appropriate upgrade scripts through upgrade22.php. This will upgrade your database to 2.2.9.
http://www.vbulletin.com/members/upgrade.html
After this, immediately upload the vB 3.0.7 files and run the upgrade process to it.
