Ok... I'll fess up, I'm a microsoft guy. So all this time running a unix server was a killer, it's like driving with blindfolds on - you never know when you're going to crash, but you know you're going to :(

So now my hosting co. offers windows servers. For me it would be a godsend, I would be able to manage my server MUCH better, but I'm afraid of performance issues with programs that I assume were built for unix. How would one site with 3-400 people online at a time do on a new box with 1gb of ram?

Windows will run as well or better. One of my sites always had 600 or more online at a time and Windows never broke a sweat.
Windows is secure as you make it. Keep up with the updates and install only the services you need and you won't have a problem.
I use remote desktop to manage my server. It's like sitting in front of it even though it is across the country. I would recommend Windows. I've never had a problem with the servers I've had.

As well or better? While I do run a few Windows boxes in addition to a few *nix boxes, VB runs MUCH better under *nix on comparable servers in my experience.

Alrighty... one yay, one nay. Which is it? :confused:

Actually even if it's adequate I'll go with windows. The only thing that would prevent me from doing it is if it were a nightmare. Short of that, I'm moving to what I know.

It will not be a nightmare. Windows can run a VB of your size just fine.

Do you guys think that this config would be ok, with a 2.0 celeron;

1 GB RAM - (2) 80GB Hard Drives
1300 GB Monthly Transfer

400 users with a 2gig celeron? No, you need more horsepower.

I didn't get replies to my query but I kinda figured from reading other's queries. Right now it's running adequately on a 2gig P4. I am moving to Windows, so I got a 2.4 P4 with 1 gig of memory.

Will that do? That's really streching my budget.... it was pretty much the best I could do.

Never, ever ever get a celeron, thats like trying to haul a semi truck with a ford focus.

He he... nice analogy. Well thanks for the tip! I hope the P4 hauls the semi ok.

The same can generaly be said about the P4 to Xeon move
