I always thought this was illegal, but I've re-read the liscense agreement and I don't see it in there. Just to be safe, though...

My question: Is it legal for me to upload and install my currently inactive copy of vBulletin to someone else's FTP server? The owner and anyone else allowed access to that server would, of course, be able to view and download the vB files if they so chose. They would not have vB liscences of their own.

Am I okay to do this? Or do I have to purchase my own webspace where only I have access to the vB forum directory?

[EDIT]: Thank you sir, I appreciate the rapid response!

The owner of the license is responsible for the distribution of the files. Files are not allowed to be distributed between people, servers, etc. Unless it is for your own forum. For example, if you are moving from server 1 to server 2. Or install the software for someone else who will then use it.

You are allowed to have 1 instance of vBulletin for your license.

So if you have removed the software from your server you can install it somewhere else and you can use it there. Or in this case, your friends.

Note: If they run the forum software and give it to others - multiple instances and distributing the files - you run the risk of having your license revoked and be hold responsible for the breaking of the license agreement.

If you don't want to use the license anymore you can request to have it transferred to a third party. So they become the owners of the license.
