View Full Version : Suggestion: IP Logging

It would appear as ips are only logged if you post, if this is true (I didnt see where it was logged elsewhere) I would definately suggest either changing it to log when the user logs in or have the option to log ips based on posts and login or just posts.

The search utility is very nice in the control panel but if your trying to identify someone who has access to a board who shouldnt through another persons account it becomes rather difficult if the person who isnt supposed to have access is strictly reading the material there but not making any posts. This way if it was changes or at least the option was added you could very easily identify accounts in which multiple people were using (by looking at logins geographically based upon the ip addresses being logged when someone logs in)

Just a little suggestion, would make my life easier. I went ahead and implemented a table that stores userid / ip but havent done anything else to it (was just searching it using mysql cmds from a shell) was hoping to see something similar implemented on a professional scale that would be very similar to the system already implemented.

The IP address is logged for when the user first registers, and whenever they post.

The problem with logging every IP would be the huge amount data that would have to be stored and updated every time a unique user/ip visited.

and if the boards have 20000 visitors a day?

IP addresses are probably the worst way to try and track someone.

I could shut my computer off and I guarantee you, I will have a new IP address the next time I boot up.

Or I could switch ISP's and have a new IP address.

If I switch from a direct connection (Cable/DSL) to dial-up on an ISP (yes many are providing backups now), I get a new and totally different IP address.

Just to prove my point... here is a partial list of the IP addresses I have used to post on my own board.
These accounts for restarts, different computers, moving around the country, using computers at other companies or famiy member's houses and so forth...

So to get rid of me totally you would have to ban every member of AOL (approx. 40 million), every employee at Oracle (80,000), every person using UUNet connections in Lancaster Ca. (almost 500,000 possibilities), and everyone at my ISP (probably 100,000 nationwide).
