Update: You can now find this hack !here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16290), Thank you to Kier, and Tubedogg!

Basicly, every member (who says its ok, in the profile) gets a email once a week (or whenever they say, in the profile) with a community update.

I would LOVE this feature for my forums! Everyone knows its ten times easyer to get a return customer, then a new customer, but most of us spend our time trying to get new customers! With a community update feature, this is done for us, every week!

I would like to see something like this:

BikeForums.Com Community Update!

What do you think? What would you like to add to the community updates? What would you change? Is it a good idea? Would you use it?

Out of my 1050 members, 800 of them have less then 5 posts, i think a system like this would get thoes less active members coming back to the forums again and again!

YES! Definitely. It is a good idea to keep in touch with your "customers", even though they're not paying directly for your service. It's a great way to retain active members, instead of someone going to a board, asking one question, and then leaving again.

So, Please?????

I think people should only receive thread updates in their e-mail, to their subscribed threads. That's a much better option (especially for the large forums).

If I am visiting a webmaster forum, I would like to receive updates to the "Advertising & Affiliate Programs" threads and "Web Page Design" threads. I wouldn't care or like my e-mail to be cluttered with "General Chat' threads or the "Promotion and Marketing" threads.

It think this would be a much better enhancement, and hope that's the way its done ;)

Just so you know Webwizard, I will be implementing this on a forum and category level by subscription so that you will only get notice from those forums that you choose on either a daily or weekly schedule.

That way you can subscribe to our "Advertising & Affiliate Programs" or "Web Page Design" forums and get just the information you need. ;)

Tue 10th Apr '01, 2:33pm
Kier you asked:

i) an extra option in profile to turn it off.
ii) ability to set the frequency of the updates. It would be good if it could be:
- daily
- weekly
- monthly

iii) ability to set in profile number of everything so you could see:

ALL (to see ALL the new threads, all the New polls) etc.
40, 30 20, etc...

These would then all "go back" as far as the last update was sent so if this was "activity in threads" if you set ALL you get a list of all threads with posts in since the last update, if you set 40 you get the latest 40.

iv) ability to add extra elements using the online forum, ie it updates the actual php code so people could just post the php code here for an extra option like "Top 10 posters" and this gets added to php code and becomes an options.

can't wait for this!

Wed 11th Apr '01, 7:24am
Yes this would be 1 cool hack !

Possible thought:

at some point i think an extra tab in member.php for "email settings" would be useful. It would list (currently)

- subscribed threads
- admin email?
- email from other users?
- email upon pm

and

- settings for this hack
- settings for subscribed forums, if wayne is releasing this as a hack

and anything else we think off...

First off, nobody said life was fair. ;)

But seriously, what hack are you referring to? Kier did not make a hack like we are discussing in this thread, and I am also unaware of any hacks he has made where he has posted screenshots and not the hack itself...?:confused:

Actually tubey, I was kinda hoping that your would finish off the Community Bulletin script for me... I'm kinda busy right now...

Wed 9th May '01, 6:17am
is there any way of archiving these mailing sent out ?

tubedogg
Wed 9th May '01, 6:23am
I don't see why not. Do you mean archive to a post on your board, or something else?

veedee
Wed 9th May '01, 6:50am
Yeah something along those lines mate, like a hard copy that an Admin or any given user can look at.

I am not sure why !

Some website though used to (and probably) still do archive their news letters, so users can read them and choose whether they want to sign up, or use them for refernce etc.

I just thought it might be a good feature in that the codingtime:feature ratio will still be high :)

tubedogg
Wed 9th May '01, 7:07am
Sorry, I think you misunderstood me. Not "Why", I was saying I don't see "why not". :)

But yes you've got a good point there. It would be very simple to do. I'll work on it later. Got another hack in the works, but I'm adding this to my to-do list.

I have a community update hack that I think I got from Kier, anyways, I have integrated it fully into my board, and even added it to the control panel, so it is really easy to send them out. If anyone wants it, I'll post Kier's code again, and then all the modifications that I made.

I also wanted to thank everyone for making this hack, or helping out, i cant wait to use it on my forums, im sure this will get hundreds of already registered users coming back to the site to post :)

Interesting you should mention that...I had to go learn Regular Expressions to do the post a copy to your board thing. :) Meaning it took slightly longer than I expected. But it's done nonetheless.

Here is the little mod I made so you can access it from the control panel:

Search for:

<tr><td>
<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" id="navtable">
<?php maketableheader("Announcements"); ?>
</table>
<a href="announcement.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=add" class="newa"> Add </a> |
<a href="announcement.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>&action=modify"> Modify </a>
</td></tr>

and under that add:

<tr><td>
<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" id="navtable">
<?php maketableheader("Community Bulletin"); ?>
</table>
<a href="commbull.php?s=<?php echo $session[sessionhash]; ?>" class="newa"> New </a>
</td></tr>

YUP! This is just one of the great additions to VBulletin.

Not only do we badly need a feature like this, but we also need the ability to send out an electronic newsletter to our members. We run a website for people who suffer from severe hairdiseases and we need to publish a newsletter.

A community update would be fine, but we also would like to be able to expand it with a website update or newsletter!

Grover.
