OK follow me here. :) (I couldn't think of how to phrase this, so the subject line is kind of messed up, but oh well...)
If you follow a link to a "forum" that is being used as a category (e.g. on this board that would be vBulletin 2.0, General, etc.) it shows the icons that are shown on the thread list (new since last visit, over x views/x replies, etc.) and not the icons that appear on the main page (the new since last visit, no new since last visit, closed forum). So my suggestion is check if canshowthreads is set to no, and if it is, show the three icons, and if it is set to yes, then show the 6 icons that correspond to threads.
Does this make any sense? I realize it's slightly convoluded :) but it makes sense to me! :D
