WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has submitted his resignation to President Bush, the White House said on Monday.
National security adviser Condoleezza Rice is the "likely" choice to succeed Powell, a senior U.S. official told CNN.
Rice is "the president's choice," and an announcement is likely this week, another senior U.S. official said.
Powell is the most prominent of four Cabinet officials whose resignations were announced Monday by the White House.
The others were Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

Hmm, interesting... I wonder what's really happening behind the scenes.

Before the election there were rumors that Rumsfeld intends to step down as well.

It was mentioned briefly back in June that he would resign after the election due to personal health reasons.

In reality, or is the politician reason for "spenidng more time with his family?"

Wouldn't that give a wrong message though?
"Can't clean up the mess we made, so might as well quit."
That is how I see it. And they were clever enough to wait till the election is over with. Although that is quite obvious because Powel even stated it in his resignation letter...

Apparently it's not uncommon for it to happen during a second term. Most democrats are happy that Ashcroft resigned because he was widely considered to not fully respect the constitution when creating legislation (a la Patriot Act).

He had surgery last December for prostrate cancer. That could definately be related.

This is a shame, he was about the only person with an ounce of credibiliy left in the cabinet. I also heard it was going to be Rumsfield going not him, although as he has been compltly sidelined by Rumsfield/Wolfowitz its not surprising - I wouldn't be surprised if he makes a run in 2008. But whats the point announcing this a day after they announce he is going to Palestine? Talk about a lame duck diplomat - doubt that will give the Palestinians much hope.

This (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&ncid=535&e=4&u=/ap/20041116/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/rumsfeld_1) was the best I could find.
I saw an earlier version of an article, before Rice was officially given the job, expressing her possible interest in Rumsfeld's position. Anyone know how to view previous "versions" of published articles on Yahoo News?

I think thats probably the idea. The US wouldn't want to send anyone important or with actual weight to negotiate with the Palestinians in case they actually resolved something. Wouldn't make the Israelis very happy! :(

That would be a good balance if he did I suppose, to CP leaving. Though that would depend on who replaced him.

True, though if they stop what's going on at the moment and sort it out they can use Arafat as a scapegoat, though that wouldn't serve the political end.

Wouldn't supprise me, though I can see CP's point of view if he did resign "there is only so much you can do" as it were.
Will be intresting to hear the offical statment.

In 2000, Powell said he would only serve one term as Secretary of State. In December 2003, he had surgery for prostrate cancer. When asked to run for president in 1996, he had stated that he wouldn't want to be a career politician and refused to do so.
Sure people can change their minds but this doesn't look like one of those cases.

News Reporters are clueless, they don't remember what happened previous to the last ratings sweeps or pulitzer awards... Even when they know the answer, they muck it up with stupid ponderings.

[H]e was widely considered to not fully respect the constitution when creating legislation (a la Patriot Act).
Haha... yeah that would definately be not fully respecting the constitution since it is Congress' job to create legislation, not an Executive Branch member's job.
