I have been with phpbb for a few years now. So far they are great and IMO the best for their price, FREE. But I have a hair up my butt to purchase a owner license of VB just to see how good it really is.
My main beef with phpbb is that after I install some mods and then a new release of phpbb comes out, the new patch nukes a majority of my mods out. So I then need to spend a LOT of time reinstalling them. Plus right now the search function on my site isn't exactly working so well.
Since phpbb doesn't really support exporting users, messages and private messages, in order to add those DB elements to a new fresh install. I'm struck with continuing to re-patch a broken version of VB.
My question is, how do the mods work with VB. Is there a mod install app within the admin panel that makes installing EVERY vb mod easy? Do I need to add them by hand? and do new patches of VB wipe out some mods?
Also can I expect the users, posts and private messages out of VB, nuke the forums, reinstall the forums and them restore the users, posts and PMs?
BTW One reason that may keep me from ever going to VB is that I have a custom script running on my sites front page, not within the phpbb directory. This is a sign up list for computer events that I hold. You can view this sign up list on the right hand side of my web page (caution, page loads slow... will be moving to a new server soon).
The sign up list on my site is GREATLY needed and one of the key elements to my site, since my site is all about our events and the sign up list is the core.
By chance is there a sign up list mod for VB that makes it so that ONLY users of VB can sign up for on a sign up list, similar to my list? Or if not can anyone develop a mod to do just that? If so my check for $160 will be sent out today.
Also, another question about converting phpbb to VB. How do the polls convert over? Will all of my polls convert with no problem and will they still be accessible for a reply? Oh and does VB have a front page poll mod? So I can run a VB poll on the front page of my site, outside of the VB folder?
I'm just curious as to what things VB can and can not import from phpbb as well as the question regarding a sign up list.
Thanks
