i am looking for a dedicated server. as i see, many of the hosts dont have a firewall, or it is very expensive. i know there are a lot of people having their own dedicated in this forum. how do you provide your own securtiy or what are the hosting companies doing against the hacker attacks?
thank you

I think it is right in saying that most webservers are not behind firewalls.
What people do is research on security and follow the basic guidelines - ie replace telnet with SSH etc.

Shut down ftp and telnet.
Use ssh and sftp instead.
Use Qmail instead of sendmail.
Use DJBdns instead of BIND.
Learn as much as you possibly can, update software when bugfixes come out.
Web hosts are usually pretty slack with security, never ever trust any web host about your server being secure.
