View Full Version : A new kind of sub-mods?

First of all, I apologize for using the pre-sales forum for this. I've searched the forum for answers and am not (yet) allowed to post in the How-do-I-forum, but will be purchasing VB shortly. Feel free to move this post to a more relevant forum...

We have a huge forum with plenty of spam, but not enough moderators to keep control. Now I'd like to offer some of the veterans in the forum the possibility to help us keep it clean (beyond just reporting), but since we are a newspaper we cannot give them normal moderator status - that is, let them delete and prune beyond reversibility.

The neat solution would be, I think, to give these "sub-mods" the option to move messages they find offensive from the forum and to some kind of moderation queue. Then, a mod or supermod could simply go through that list and either delete the message or move it back to where it was.

As I write this, I realize that the "hidden forum"-function might solve this. Letting the "sub-mods" move messages into a special hidden forum? But - will the mods then be able to see which thread the message came from??

Any feedback/suggestions appreciated...

Kris
 A one-man-think-tank isn't that fun...

You might try customizing permissions, and allowing certain mods to soft-delete the message while more advance mods (or admins) just be able to prune/mass move.

Soft-delete is basically when you delete, but it still exists and only visible to mods/admins ;)

I'm aware of the soft-delete function, and have considered this - but the mods can't search for / obtain a list over soft-deleted messages only, or can they?

The point is that mods must be able to take a peek at the soft-deleted messages and have the final word.

I usually let admin's have final word, but yea it should work.

I think a hack might be needed to filter all soft deleted message.

I agree on the admin part - the thing here is we will have admins, mods and what I call "sub-mods". Whereas admins and mods are our own staff members and will have all moderator permissions, this feature I'm describing is for the "sub-mods". These are simply veteran forum members who have proven to be intelligent and up for the task. "Santa's little helpers", so to speak.

Nevertheless, we need to limit their powers. Thus the requested feature.

But thanx a lot, I will get working at the patch you describe. Should cover our needs nicely.
