I had UXTheme.dll patched using the Neowin patcher previously under SP1. When I upgraded to SP2, that stopped working. I downloaded the new UXtheme patcher and first I had to restore my old uxtheme.dll file with it. Running it again supposedly patches uxtheme for SP2, but it still doesn't work. How have any of you gone about patching UXTHeme.dll under SP2?

Do a search for uxtheme.dll and manually replace all instances of it with the patched dll. SP2 puts copies of it in strange places so most auto-patchers don't find them.
Make sure you select advanced search and select search hidden files and folders.
Also click cancel when WFP warnings popup.

Shouldn't this do all of that?

That doesn't work. XP puts uxtheme.dll is obscure folders and the patcher doesn't look in them.
For example you'll find it in:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
as well as:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
You won't find it in:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
which is one of the dirs the patcher looks for.
Do it manually or create a batch file to automate it.

Okay, do you know where I can get the updated dll for SP2? All I have is the patcher, not the dll itself.
I'm surprised it doesn't work. Supposedly that version of the patcher specifically says it works in XP SP2.

I attached a zip with my uxtheme.dll which is patched.
The way I installed it was to search for all instances of uxtheme.dll. Then I renamed each one uxtheme.old and after rename copyied the patched dll into the folder. Start in i386 and sp dirs. You'll get WFA prompts insert XP disk. Just cancel it. Reboot and you'll be patched.

Did you default your uxtheme.dll's before upgrading to SP2? Still not working for me. I'm wondering if its because I tried the Neowin patcher after upgrading, or because I left uxtheme custom before upgrading.
I might have to Restore to before the SP, do it again, and do uxtheme your way.
Did you do it in safe mode?
I greatly appreciate the help. :D
//Edit: Just searched the error message I was getting and found a thread on Neowin about it. It recommended a program called replacer for replacing system files. Just tried it. Works. :) Thanks a ton. :D
