UPDATED vbPortal beta1 released, I'm not really too good at this, so it is what it is.

Get it at http://www.phpportals.com in my new IndexU scripts section.

I was unable to make it run. Plenty of parse errors didn't make much problems and I cleaned them up but then I recieved cache errors:

Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in ./vbpstuff.php on line 104

Warning: fopen("/forums/cache/Slashdot.cache","w") - No such file or directory in ./vbpstuff.php on line 134

Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid File-Handle resource in ./vbpstuff.php on line 154

Warning: fopen("/forums/cache/PHPBuilder.cache","w") - No such file or directory in ./vbpstuff.php on line 134

Make sure you create a directiry named "cache" in your vb root per "INSTALL" instruction 5.

5. Create the following directories and/or copy the vbPortal scripts as *indicated for vbPortal operation
Directory: ......

* /vbulletin_root/cache....................(Cache directory for the News grabber
** SET CACHE DIRECTORY PERMISSIONS TO drwxr-xr-x (chmod 777)

Please let me know what parse errors you got, if they were typos or ommisions in the source?

PeF
Thu 15th Mar '01, 7:47am
I created cache directory (testing on W2k) and set appropriate local and IIS permissions onto the dir.

I'll try it on a fresh install of vB 2.0 on Linux this evening and send you any parse errors found.

Btw: Thanks for releasing it.

The global.php cannot be redistributed. It violates the license agreement. You can redownload it from the member's area.

Oh, I see.

i have the original global.php file, but I wanted the "modified" one for this script. For some reason, when I follow the instructions and modify my global file than i get that error.

Anybody know why?

Thanks,

Ray

Its a *bad* idea to modify global.php as it will get overwritten with every install of vB.

Would be good if config.php had a variable in it called

$external_mods_files=filea.php,fileb.php

and global.php went in a loop and loaded those files.

Any script that you hack most likely will be overwritten when you re-install, upgrade vB... the penalty of installing a hack, is you have to re-install with upgrades.

That is why it has an Alpha designation... Sometimes I wonder if you actually read the posts or just randomly post 1 word and 1 line posts to boost your post count.

I'm french wayne and it's very hard for me to speak correctly english you know?
I say what i can say!

vbportal makes a lot better name I think as PHP Nuke is seen as a portal program and I see this as a great hack to date when its finshed. (Out of alpha)

Good work so far with adding new stuff like BFC Web Log, Links and other things. :)

For jojo:
Yeah but just posting for the sake of it is just littering this thread with silly things like "It has a long away to go" when the first post already tells us.

Also the creater is a newbie to PHP so dont expect anything prefect to come out for a while. So he does indeed have to do a lot to bring it upto full force.

I'm 15 years and i make english since.....5 years not more

I have to admit my english isn't the best around here either.

Sorry in advance jojo I should have known English was a hard subject as I have my own troubles with it.

vBPortal is the excellent piece of software. I found only one major bug and there's missing tag in one of templates. I'm currently testing whole thing and will post some comments and suggestions or even better fixes as soon as finished.

That's all. I think it's pretty good when considering it's alpha release.

I can see hard work behind this hack.
Pat yourself on the backs.

Make sure your news editpost template is named correctly "P_NewsEditPost" I did I typo I think!

And I wish to thank everyone for the support. I'm just learning PHP (trial and error) and having fun, but I do want to have this end up as a good hack, so any constructive comments is appreciated.

BTW, if you post in my forums your not limited to one thread and I would really like to get alot of input into different aspects of the scripts.

i.e. What I did wrong and how to fix it...
What could be done better, tell me (you'll get credit)

Best of all you'll get a free copy :D

Fixed bugs (I hope) that were found today and made available a new install in vbportals downloads area. I wish to thank those pointing those pesky things out to me. I will be trying to post an updated zip as often as I can until all bugs are squashed!!!!
Then the fun will begin with cool styles/themes and custom user options. Not counting a slew of addons in the works that will be integrated to use vB's selectable styles.

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

ALSO: I can't login to my control panel... unless I'm using the wrong password, all it does is refresh. I want to check what it is in phpMyAdmin, does anyone know what the members table name is?

pestilence
Sat 17th Mar '01, 6:21pm
the control panel refreshing might be caused by an error in global.php as to the other errors i believe i had them because i had not referenced my paths correctly as specified in the install instruction and in your mysql db the table is users just browse the user table .

If this hack was included in the next version of vBulletin it would be a lot easier :) Maybe they could setup a special section where you can download beta stuff. :D Just a suggestion

wajones
Thu 22nd Mar '01, 4:53pm
Alpha5 should be out by this weekend if everything goes right.
Features will include...
1. Web Links Add-on.
2. Events and Birthday hack in left column.
3. A new MySQL based main menu system.
4. A new MySQL based vbPortal admin hack
for vBulletins control panel.
5. A few bug fixs.
6. Started cleaning up the PHP and HTML coding
and modularizing the install, hacks and add-ons
for a easier cleaner upgrade path.

This is a continuing process and vbPortal won't
go beta until I'm satisfied with the install procedure.

Yes, it's a hack or add-on for vBulletin and you do need to own vBulletin.

got to say my words of encouragement.

I read through your site, and you looked disheartened that people werent interested.

Talking with a few pals over ICq, quite the opposite. I for one will install it v soon after my upgrade to vB2 and i know others will follow suit.

I think its just a case of people trusting hacks as far as others opinion, so u can be guaranteed that when i install i will be backing this one, and helping try to drum up public support of it.

Gimme 2 weeks to sort my life out and u WILL have another dedicated follower to the future that is the vBportal !

What exactly does the program _DO_?

Went to your site, and all I can gather is that it's a news poster/logger like Blog.

If that's the case, I'd love to use it after I get vbulletin.

(And if vbulletin eventually supports email submission of posts, it'd be even greater.)

Don't give up on it, whatever it is. :) Good to see you put it back up.

Before I can make a beta release I have to know what I've done wrong. So I need some constructive feed back on the various ways I've implemented the vbstuff etc. so that I can make corrections. Until then I agree no one should put it on their production site., although it seems stable after you labor though the install.

The various addons, links, downloads etc. are just fluff and I'm not spending a lot of time on them except just trying to show people haw easy addons are once the vbPortal thingy is stable and "efficient" Almost any third party add can be hacked in to use vB's styles. For instance I roughed in a hack of PHPWebCard this moring in about two hours.

BTW, I want to thank everyone for the encouragement i've been getting.

the problem with that is that. i aint have my own site design. i want sommin like newspro where i can jsut post news and put a simple include on the main page and then you see it all the in its lil tables. noone i see. might be losin vB due to login problems soem ppl face with it (especially behind proxies) cookies dont work at all. either it fixes by beta 4 or i'll ave to wait for it to come out of beta version, 2 come out.

Yes, it is a little difficult. I'm trying to simplify it as I go. Making it more modular so that you can install the basic vbPortal without the addons. You can do that now but the install docs cover everything.

Because it's a vBulletin hack not a complete program. There is no way to make a install to go thru and change the scripts for you. At least that's beyond my abilities.

It's not hard to install if you have installed hacks before, the hard part is my ability to explain how to do it I guess. I hope it will be getting a little better soon. I'm changing some things that will make the hardest part easier.

Anyway it's off line till I make the changes, I'll let you know when it's available again. Then if anyone wants it it will be available.

I have decided to move on with other projects, I will be starting my own BBS soon, I won't drop vbPortal but development will be behind closed doors because I need my lic. to run my own site. I won't close the vbPortal site until I'm ready to open the other, but I can't really spend the time supporting this project much more. The interest is good, but I need to move on to supplement my retirement. I'll let everyone that's interested know before that happens and will reserve a spot on my new board for vbPortal inquiries and support. I will also post any new update's on the bulletin board and the vbulletin.org board.

I'm not dropping it, just redirecting my energy :D

BTW...
For those that may be interrested I forgot to complete the admin block in the latest release, But I just put the updated vbpstuff.php zip into my downloads section, just replace your existing vbpstuff.php in the vB root and add the var $P_adminblock in the P_header and P_forumheaderall templates right under the $P_mainmenu var in each of these. What this does is provide a admin block that only the admin and moderators can see. You can use it for short cuts such as a link to your admin cp etc. just format with html using the block administration in the cp as with the other blocks.

ob_end_clean();

I added that into the PHPinclude template and I get this error:

Is PHP4 REQUIRED to use VBPortal? Is there a workaround to this problem?

That ob_start function is php4 only. I dont' know a workaround (which doesn't mean there isn't one).
