You might not be able to in this forum, but it is more than possible.

Where in the Admin Control Panel is the setting to allow for Image attachement? What does the Icon look like that the user will click to allow to upload an image?

Is it possible to make the image viewable within the thread without clicking the file that was inserted into the post?

Image attachments are a user group setting. You can set it so that all Registered users can upload images.

In another part of the Admin control panel, you can control the different file type extensions AND file sizes. For instance, you could set it so users can upload an Adobe PDF file up to 1024kb. You can also specify the max width/height of uploaded images, for instance users can upload JPEGs up to 800 x 600 and up to 100kb.

Attachments have quite a few settings but easy to configure once you know where to look.

What does the Icon look like that the user will click to allow to upload an image?
There is no system in place for a user to just upload a photo to a thread. Users are welcome to post a short message and then attach multiple images to that post.

Is it possible to make the image viewable within the thread without clicking the file that was inserted into the post?
Yes, you can turn off image thumbnails and have images viewed in-line.

Hi,
I have enabled images for my board but in Admin CP do not see a setting to prevent non Registered Users from uploading images. I can stop them uploading avatars and profile pictures, does this also stop them uploading any picture?

Thanks,
Mickey

Guests cannot upload Attachments at all.

Could you tell me, if you turn off thumbnails, where does the inline image appear? Above or below the message text?

Also, do you know of a working board where I could see an example of a post with an inline image?

Same place where mine did above :) there is no thumbnail for that image as it is too small.

Sorry Zachary, I only see a small icon and the text [vb_logo_small.gif (1.2 KB, 48 views)] I want users to see the actual picture, not a link. I have been told this is possible?

Zachery

That is the actual picture I attached :) not a thumbnail, only if the image is too large does it get thumbnailed like so

Still can't see a picture (unless I click the link of course). Can the picture not be displayed in the post?

That image above is what i am currently seeing, the image with the small v logo is attached and showed inline, the one with the small black bg and red text is thumbnailed.

Hi. Appreciate your patience with this.

First image (small 'v' logo) I see:
[icon} vb_logo_small.gif (1.2 KB, 48 views)

The second image (vBulletin in red/black), I see in the post:
[icon] vbulletin_logo_evil.gif (3.0 KB, 2 views)

The third image I just see the URL:
http://www.geekydesigns.com/whatisee.gif

BUT...

I am using a Mac.

Gonna check on the PC. Back in a minute.

I just used a url for the third image, because your not a licensed member i suspect you cannot see attachments in this forum or at least thumbnails.

You can attach images inline via the tag and attachments are always shown at the bottom of the post

Nope. All I see is icons and links. Here's what I want:

Now can vBulletin do this?

Zachery

You can put images inline with an image tag([img], you can have images attached to the board and displayed inline(below the post) with or without thumbnails.

I need users to upload a picture with their post to the vBulletin server, stored in the DB and have it display with the text. I do not want them to use the IMG tag to place an image linked from another server. I might settle for a thumbnail of the image. I don't want just an icon and a link.

I have to make a decision which board to buy which is why I am asking all these dumb questions. I already know you can't display attached images inline in IPB, although you do get a thumbnail of the image if GD lib is installed. Discus Pro (the above example) does display the image. I don't mind if vBulletin doesn't support this - I still think it's a great product - but to date no-one can show me an example? :(

Gotta make a decision this week.

Yes, you CAN attach images and have them stored in the database AND be displayed inline with no thumbnails, below the post.

Thx. Is there a live board somewhere I can see this? Does anyone have a live vBulletin board where this is done that will allow me to satisfy my insatiable demand for proof. Need not be about fish ;)

Ah... thumbnails! :) Excellent. Many, many thanks!. The thread has a lot of broken IMG links which is exactly what I want to avoid. Unfortunately, the full-size pic of the monkey in the thread is a linked image. All I need to see now is whether you can display a full size uploaded image instead of a thumbnail?...

the monkey is showing up for me as a large image. so its probably a problem with your browser that it isnt getting displayed correctly, but im not sure about that.

No. It displays just fine. I meant it is linked - from another server, placed in the post using the Insert IMG tag. The thumbnails are attachments. I need large images like the monkey but are uploaded as attachments.

well i think he just linked, but you cant copy the attachment link and place it within [img] tags to display it full size, the nearest that i cant get is this:

The small monkey image is an attachment. Happy with attachments now. :) If you roll your mouse over it, the browser status bar says something like:

forums.jolt.co.uk/attachment.PHP?attachmentid=12345

The image is there for good, unless a moderator removes it. The big monkey image in the previous forum is linked. Right-click the image, select 'properties' and you can see the URL, shown below:

goofyphotos.com/fun/larrykinglive.jpg (http://www.goofyphotos.com/fun/larrykinglive.jpg)

If goofyphotos.com move this image, you'll get a broken link icon. Bad.

I want to see if vBulletin has the option to show a full-sized sick fish, or a full sized monkey with glasses on, that is uploaded as an attachment. :D  :p :)

THX but couldn't view your article Maggie. Says registration required.

Aah!... big car attachment :) :) :) Great Maggie, many thanks. No special mods, hacks, spells or voodoo required to achieve this in vBulletin. Just a standard admin option for the forum?

I have been playing with the user control panel and discovered the following checkbox in the Edit Options screen:

[+] Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)

It was un-checked. I ticked it and NOW I can see the attachments and linked images posted by Zachery earlier in this thread. :o Might be worth changing to help newbies like me understand why nothing appears to appear?
