View Full Version : Intermittent MySQL Error

Our Forum went live last night, and all seems to be going smoothly so far, however every now and then I get the following error sent from my SQL:-
Database error in vBulletin :
Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error:
mysql error number: 0
It does not seem to be effecting the Forum from performing, at the height of activity last night when we first when live, and people were registering and also posting, it was happening about every 30-40 minutes, over about a 3 hour period, but then it levelled off and only happened about twice over night (UK time).
But since going live at 9.30 GMT yesterday, it's happened about eight times in 9 hours.
Good, bad something to worry about.....

If this happens now and then this is a server issue. You'll need to contact your host about this.

Thanks - thought it might be a hosting issue - just wanted to check first.....

Right - well I contact our hosting company and guess what - not an issue with their MySQL server, as no other users on the Server are getting problems.
So to try and bottom this out, the full e-mail we are getting back is as follows:-
Database error in vBulletin :
Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error:
mysql error number: 0
Date: Thursday 05th of August 2004 05:13:31 PM
Script: http://www.diecast-aviation.co.uk/forums/login.php
Referer: http://www.diecast-aviation.co.uk/forums/index.php
IP Address: 69.208.174.11
We have now had about 54 errors logged since going live on the 1st August - can you elaborate - if at all - what the issue might be.
Thanks.

The details in config.php are incorrect, otherwise it would connect to the MySQL server. Your hosting company confirmed the server is up I take it, so request their assistance for the right database host address, the database name and the user/pass combination that has permission to connect to that host, database for a successful connection.

Actually that's the rub - because we can get access to the Bulletin board, and do all the usual bulletin board type things - this error happens intermittantly, and as yet has followed no particular pattern.
The board appears to continue running when it happens, as I have as yet not had anyone complain.
But I would like to get it bottomed out.

It is quite possible that the MySQL server goes away (dies, crashes, restarts, reached max connections) when this happens. Your host probably has a log file with the mysql start/stops/events for your account which he could investigate into. We unfortunatly don't have those details for you.

Does Vbulletin actually use Socket or Port to connect to MySQL?
And in either case does this need to be specified in the config.php file.
Thanks.

Reply back from our ISP states that our MySQl connections are 100 - is this enough for VBulletin use???
Or my question should be are there any calculations to work out what MySql Connections should be?
Our Forum has been live for 1½ weeks we now have 140 members, 2100 posts and 150 threads.
So from this is there anyway of calculating or extrapulating what connections should be set to?
Thanks

probably not enough for shared or even dedicated server hosting..
the error you get is when mysql server crashes momentarily due to not handling the load and 90% of the time it's due to mysql settings in /etc/my.cnf not being optimally set to handle the load, the other 10% of the time is the server hardware is inadequate to handle the load and/or the server is overloaded or overcrowded (in shared hosting environment)
ask you web host the following questions listed at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 and see what they reply with along with how many sites share the server if it's shared hosting

As expected - response from our ISP - time to look for another Hosting Company me thinks.....
Thanks for your query.
The Mysql server is hosted on a separate machine to allow for optimum speed, however we have not heard of any other complaints from any other users. We would suggest that the problem lies in the software being overally complicated. Perhaps another buletin board (Such as phpbb could be tested?).

Yes not the ideal response, but also how many vB users you serving ? in shared hosting once you hit consitently 50-75 vB users you should start looking at higher end server or own dedicated servers.. as shared hosting most likely is already overcrowded and not adequate for your needs

Yeah thanks for that - maybe if we shout at them hard and long enough they may do us a deal on a dedicated server.
As for the users - not that many at the moment as we have only been fully running for less than two weeks - but we currently have 150 members signed up and most online has been 22 - so the shared server must be getting hammered by something else as well - but they want to keep that close to their chests I get the feeling, from some of the cagey responses I have had......

Right I think we have them nailed in proving the error is at their end.
Recieved numerous errors again tonight, but tried to get into phpmyadmin to see if I could check to make sure the DB was online, and what error message do I receive when I tried to connect:-
Server mysql1.xxxxxxxxxx (http://mysql1.streamline.net/phpmyadmin/main.php?lang=en-iso-8859-1&server=1)
Error
MySQL said:
#1040 - Too many connections
BUSTED......
Can anybody add to that? Comment please??

This means the server has maxed out on the number of MySQL connections allowed. Only your host can change the number of allowed connections.

Steve,
Appreciate your reply.... So, if I am reading that right, it's a hosting problem, not our database problem.....?
Thanks for your reply.
Looks like we are in the process of looking for a new host!!!! Is it so hard to adjust the maximum number of 100 upwards and if so, does it use more hosting resources.... Just trying to get an idea and build-up a case!!!
And they said unlimited usuage...... Hmmm.

Appreciate your reply Steve and will keep you guys informed of the outcome.... Strangely we have not had any errors since 9.30am UK time, which I would say is the same time they reported they could find no errors and also no problems!!!
Makes you think..... Lets hope they have addressed the situation as no errors since today.......
Appreciate your return comments
