Question about phpBB import

Hi all,

I have vbulletin up & running in a beta type setup at the moment (old phpbb site is up & running as the live site). My plan is to import the current site into the vbulletin site & kinda see what needs fixing or tweaking.

That should give me a chance to see what will or wont need work when I do the import for real. I also need to play with the style, as the default one isnt to my liking.

Anyway, the current database backup file from phpbb is about 25 megs. I was curious if someone could give me a guestimate as to how long the import would take? I think the machine is a P4 2GHZ & probably about 2 gigs of ram.

Is this something that would take hours for an import?

My sister is doing the importing & she was concerned it would take a while for an import (a while of her time was the issue).

Anyway, the site currently has about 21000 posts & 700 or so users.

I would like to get a chance to import the database & play with the site & get it all tweaked & have a dry run so I know when we do the import for real, what will need to be done to get the site back up & running ASAP.

I think this would be a good test of things to come.

Any feedback would be great.

I dont think the import itself will take all that long, the longest part of any import / major upgrade (vB2>vB3) is the reindex, which rebuilds the search index. :)

You can attempt a test import if you want, you are allowed to have one extra instaltion on your server for testing purpuses as long as it is password protected diretory :)

Ahh, an extra install will be nice for testing purposes.

Could i do an import into my "almost live" site & then play with it, set the styles & other settings I like on the board, then when I get things the way I like them, scrap the database & reimport from the live site?

Yes, you will be able to backup your styles but not your settings and other such things.

Before you move to the live download the style and upload it to the new site :)

Hrmm. Ok, so if I setup my site as I like it now, (the before import) when I import my other site's database, will all my settings I just set up yesterday be wiped out?

For example, custom avatars are turned off by default (or they were for me), will that be on or off when I do the import?

Also, say I do a custom style now, when I do an import from phpbb to vbulletin, will the custom style on my vb site get wiped out when i do the data import from phpbb to vb?
