Can I do an import, then an upgrade?

I'm running a version of wwwthreads 5.4 and was wondering if the following scenario is feasible.

I install the 2.x version of vBulletin and use the wwwthreads importer to get my data in there.

Then I do an upgrade from 2.x to the 3.x.

Will that work and get all of my data into 3.x?

Does vB3 support a straight import of wwwthreads 5.4 data? It wasn't clear on the importers forum that it does. If so, that's very cool!

Not at this time. You'll need to either upgrade to UBB.Threads 6.3 or use the vB2-to-vB3 route.
