View Full Version : The new buddy list

I wanted to ask this question: What's really the purpose of the buddy list? Even on the old board, the only thing I used the buddy list for was to see when one of them was online. Now, the new buddy list in our CP doesn't even allow us to see that...
So, what's the buddy list for and where's the "Buddy is now online" icon?

The purpose of the buddy list is to allow you to keep up with your friends easily. With the links to their profile in your user cp you can quickly get to their profiles for searching.
The buddy list will still open for you in its own window the way it used to, click the 'quick links' link under the nav bar, this will expand a dropdown with a link to your buddy list.

Are you able to have the buddy list permanently showing?? I think it would be handy to see at all times if your friends are online. Having to click on the 'Quick Links' menu and then on the buddy list seems a bit long winded. Is this something that can be added/changed?
Thanks for your help!

You could always add a dreict link to it on the navbar if you dont want it in the drop down :)

When you open it, and do not close the window, it will be open perm, and auto refreshes.
The who's online page shows who is a buddy and who is not. You can also see there who's online of your buddies.

Hey guys!
Is there a way of instead of having a 'pop up buddy list' appearing, to instead have the 'buddy list' appear within the main forum index page?
Thanks

Just from your description I would imagine it can be done by simply taking the buddy list code and placing it where you want it on the page. Without having looked to see exactly how it might be done, maybe there's something to it that I'm not thinking of, but it certainly sounds good on paper. ...er... screen. :D
Actually, I think I'm going to try it for myself just to see if can be done. If no one replies with a definite answer either way I will post my findings here.

Cbiweb,
That would be great if you could.
I thought the logical place would be to be just above the 'What's going on box'......
Even if you could steer me in the direction of the code that would be great (not saying that I'll be able to do much - but atleast I can have a bit of a play with it).....
Thanks!

I have done this on my site. It isnt a good idea. You get users that have like 200 people on the list it really looks nasty. BUT what about the guys that dont have javascript enabled right? yeah I know.... I know.
I like the pop up but it isnt neat. I am trying to get it to say when there is no one online (No one is online) insted of just empty tables.

200 buddy's! That's a community!
Care to share the code you used for this?
I seem to think that if you had the list of buddy's 1 user per row - it would get ugly.
But if you put 3 or 4 users per row it might be more manageable.

John, it would be great if you could post the code you used. I'm having trouble getting the names of my buddies to show up in the list! Everything else is perfect but there are no names there. What did you do?
IMO, if members don't care how it looks to have a bizillion names on the list, who am I to stop them? :D
