Few questions
We are looking at going with servermatrix right now we are on a shared server that is down more than up
Reasons for server matrix
1 Price
2 able to load what ever we want on server
3 space and transfer
4 Tech support that answers the phone
My draw backs
1 Never installed php, mysql, or done anything on Linux
2 Installing everything that is needed
Are there any good books out there that will help me on my draw backs?
does someone offer installation help at a fee?

If you do not know what you are doing when it comes to linux it is not a great idea to jump to get a dedicated server if it is going to be in a production environment. You can always hire someone to admin your server or go with a provider that offers a semi-dedicated solution or they will manage your server completely.

I jumped into it and havent regreeted it yet ;)
I ordered a server with cpanel, which manages 99% of everything for me :) and they take care of my kernel updates so i dont worry that much :)

Zachery thanks for the reply I would get the cpanel that is for sure
Joshs the big thing is that I need Mods for apache installed for our banner ads not to mention that I could sublease out space that we dont use to others also you said something about production environment explain?
Right now we use 45GB of transfer per month with only 400 registered users on VB.3.0.1 with photopost 4.7j
So zachery how long did it take to get everything up and going? be for you went live?

It took me 4-5 days, i needed to recompile php with GD mycrypt curl and a few other odds and ends(this only took 15~ min), plus i updated cpanel and WHM,plus domain propagation ;)
Ive got a p4 at 2.8 with a gig of ram, :) the server runs very nicly :)

Yes, the P4 2.8 is a great value, and a capable server. Good choice!

I too jumped straight into it. I personally do not think there is a better way to learn unless you have a box to play around with.

I agree that getting a dedicated server will be a great idea if you intend to learn linux. The one thing I do not recommend is jupping into this if you are going to start hosting a mission critical site right a way. It is going to take some time to get used to operating the server and if a problem arises you are going to need to know how to act on it.

You could always look into Windows 2003, things should be easier (and faster) with it.

While windows 2003 might be good at somthings i really dont see a reason to use it for a webserver for vBulletin.
apache + php + mysql on linux works very well :D

You have a GUI for configuration, GUIs are much more user friendly than prompts.
Additionally, tests show that it scales better and I've read people say that they have noticed a boost from migrating to it from linux.
Or in other words, he might want to consider it.

It all depends on how php and IIS are setup also :\
When you talk about migration, was it from Sever A to Server B or Server A with linux deleted and windows installed?
If you go from server a which is less powerfull to server B which is more powerfull i think youd almost always notice a preformance increase.
I really do like windows 2003 so dont get me wrong i just think that linux tends to be a better web server for php appilcations.

I've read people's testimonys on these forums stating that they switched from Linux to Windows 2003 Server on the same hardware and saw a boost.
Anyway, I suggest he consider going with Windows 2003 its GUI has less of a learning curve.

With linux if your running WHM/cPanel, theres not so much command line interface 99% of the time. you rarely need to actualy login to SSH.

I still suggest he consider Windows 2003 Server.

windows 2003 would be nice but our ad software is not supported on windows OS
but on the side not I am MCSE in 2000 and mcsa in 2003
Maybe this could be my way of getting in to linux
Right now we are using a linux box on a shared server
Thanks for the imput everyone

I have been with SM for a while now and have been very happy with their response times.
Of course, price was why I went with them in the beginning, but they have consistently exceeded my expectations on support.
When my server was crashing due to the RHEL/hyperthreading issue, they worked on it every day until they found a kernel that would hold up and I haven't seen so much as a flitter in the load since.
Best of luck in your new venture!
