I am currently on VB version 2.3.0

According to my host: OLM.net

Here are the SPECS of my server:

Dedicated Server
P4 2.4 Ghz
(900 MHz FSB)
512 MB DDR PC2700 ECC RAM
80 GB hard drive, 7200 RPM 8MB Buffer

------

They are about to upgrade me to 2 Gigs of RAM!

-----

I have just over 4400 members and just under 1000 regular visitors......

When 130 or more of those 1000 regulars happen to all log on at the same time....MY SERVER load shoots through the roof!!!!!! And the thing all but shuts down.

What can I do....besided upgrading to the 2 Gigs.....to IMPROVE this......

My site is GROWING like crazy...and I'm running into this OVERLOAD problem every other day!!!!! I need to support 500 - 600 members all at the same time!!!!

OH I almost forgot...this is a SITE for PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS...so...they upload and view a whole lot of IMAGES....LOTS and LOTS of graphics...all of them around 80K in size!!!!!

-----

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I DO??????

PLEASE....HELP!!!!!

And thanks for your contiuned support!!!

Yours,

I would say upping your RAM from 512MB's to 2GB's should give you a performance boost that is somewhat noticable. Running a server with only 512MB's of RAM, whether it is DDR or normal SDRAM is only asking for trouble with higher traffic websites.

What are you loads hitting exactly? Do you know what your swap usage is? I would probably say that 130+ people hit your site, use up the 512MB's of RAM and then swap is dug into and when something else has to write to the drive (i.e. swap) then your loads are going to shoot up there pretty quickly.

Go with the 2GB's of RAM, test that for about a week and post in the server configuration forum here asking Eva for help with a tune-up (i.e. MySQL my.ini help). Tweak MySQL & Apache, get the RAM and you should do well.

The only other thing I could really suggest is run dual 2.4GHz processors and 1-2GB's of RAM. Right now though, it would appear as if you are just flat running out of memory and swap is writing and writing to your hard drive over and over again.

Don't you mean an 800MHz FSB? Anyway, submit an optimization request in the server config forum.
