Well my Maxtor gave up the ghost this morning. This is especially bad because with all of the school work I have to do, I really have no time for this. Anyway I'm looking for a new drive, and just wondering what most people here like.

I could've sworn I'd seen a discussion of this before, but a search returned nothing useful, so...

Hitachi I hear is about to release a 400GB hard drive, that caught my attention a few days ago, but a single hard drive that large would be hell to defrag. RAID is your friend. ;) :D

Back on topic, I perfer Seagates to most, they've really become a lot better over the years. :)

I have a Raptor and I'm happy with it. From what I understand, the 74GB Model mops the floor with almost every SCSI drive out there and the 15.3K Maxtor SCSI drive that it doesn't mop the floor with, it ties with. Even if the SATA controller doesn't support NCQ. :D

Wow, Western Digital's really won out so far. I actually picked up a Seagate today, which is supposedly much quieter than my old freight train Maxtor drive.

Seagate hands down. Their barracudas are AWESOME. VERY reliable and ultra silent.

Usually WD, but I've had no problems with Maxtor either.

I've lost four hard drives to Western Digital (on various servers and workstations). I'd go with Seagate, I've never had any problems with them failing on me, like my Western Digital ones.

Individual experiences mean almost nothing. Just go to storagereview.

I had a Western Digital die on me once. I haven't had problems with any other brands. Western Digitals must be bad.

WD for me. i haven't had much luck with other drives. Seagate seem to be getting better reviews than they used to, might try one out soon.

I usually buy what is least expensive with the best warranty at the time of purchase. That being said, all my drives are Maxtor and Western Digital and never had any problems with them. Still have a 10 year old Maxtor drive running in an old Celeron 300 that has no problems.
