Do I have to upgrade to .1 to use the importer?
Kier
Wed 14th Apr '04, 11:00pm
From the announcement:ImpEx requires at least vBulletin 3.0.1, so please upgrade vBulletin to the latest version before attempting any imports.

Wed 14th Apr '04, 11:14pm
can we just upgrade to 3.0.1 without importing
Kier
Wed 14th Apr '04, 11:20pm
vBulletin 3.0.1 is a regular vBulletin release.
If you want to run the importers you will need to upgrade to vB 3.0.1.
If you do not want to run the importers you can upgrade to vB 3.0.1 to get the latest bug fixes.
msimonds
Wed 14th Apr '04, 11:22pm
do we just upload and replace all the files like before and run the upgrade scripts
Kier
Wed 14th Apr '04, 11:24pm
Yes. The procedure for upgrading to the latest vBulletin version is always the same.

Can we request an ezboard import for vb3 or does that have to be for vb2?
Kier
Thu 15th Apr '04, 12:01am
ezboard imports are now vB3 compatible.

in the impex config... it has these fields:
sourcedatabase =
sourcetableprefix =
as well as the matching target fields..
if my database is called download_forum do I put
sourcedatabase = forum
sourcetableprefix = download_
or do I just leave the tableprefix fields blank?
Kier
Thu 15th Apr '04, 12:12am
Example impex config:
;vBulletin:Impex Config File<?php /*
[ Target Database ]
; The following settings allow ImpEx to connect to the vBulletin 3
; database into which you will be importing data.
targetdatabasetype = mysql
targetserver = localhost
targetuser = kier
targetpassword = blabla4400
targetdatabase = my_vbulletin_database
targettableprefix = vb3_
[ Source Database ]
; If the system that is being imported from uses a database,
; enter the details for it here and set 'sourceexists' to TRUE.
; If the source data is NOT stored in a database, set 'sourceexists' to FALSE
sourceexists = TRUE
sourcedatabasetype = mysql
sourceserver = localhost
sourceuser = kier
sourcepassword = blabla4400
sourcedatabase = my_phpbb_database
sourcetableprefix = phpbb_
;*/ ?>
Kier
Thu 15th Apr '04, 12:14am
PBC - in your example I would suspect that you do NOT need to enter a table prefix.

Check your targettableprefix value -- it needs to match the table prefix you specified for vB (in includes/config.php).

I for one will not be upgrading, I am tired of having to keep replacing the hacks every time there is a upgrade and I find that this one is just so soon after the stable release which leads me to believe that vB 3 Gold should of been an RC 5 release and this new release the stable one.

I own a forum using phpBB2.0.6. I read the announcement and all of this topic. I don't understand something though. First I have to install vb3.0.1 right (after I download it from the Members area), up to there it is fine, but how do I convert my existing phpBB2 Forum into a VB3.0.1 forum, is there some FAQ or Tutorial on how to do this?
I really would not want to mess up my forum content as there is quite a bit of material. Also I thought that from some time onwards it would have been the VB Team to do the conversions, am I wrong?

It is covered in the impex.readme.txt included in the vB3 Import Scripts download (in the members area) on how to import phpBB2 boards to vB3.
Remember to backup your forum database in case anything goes wrong.

If we upgrade to vBulletin 3.0.1
can we use the language file of the vBulletin 3.0.0 ?
coz i spent time translating the language file for arabic language,
so can it be used to the newer version vBulletin 3.0.1 ?
if it can not be used and translating is needed for the newer version, can you tell me about the changes in the file of language for the newer version, for winning time insdit of losing it searching for the changes.

Added &uid=$bbuserinfo[userid] to any log out links to ensure that no one else can log many people out with an image.
Requires revert? Yes!

Added conditionals to NON DHTML mode to turn off threaded options, thread search, and thread rating if those options are not enabled.

Will importers work with inactive owned licenses?
If a customer with an active owned license downloads vB3.0.1 and the importer and then lets the license become inactive, will the importer still function?

&u=$bbuserinfo[userid]
I only noticed it because I was confused by Kier's post and tried to search for what he posted and found no match.

Guys, why make us download all new files, then update them all. Why not just have us import the changed files into our web?
Wouldn't this be easier?
Are they all changed?
Config.php - Looks the same to me, so why do we have to go through changing the server info, then re-upload it?
Thanks

Config.php - Looks the same to me, so why do we have to go through changing the server info, then re-upload it?
You don't have to change this one. vBulletin specifically changes the name of this file with a different extension so it doesn't overwrite your existing configuration.
As for the rest of the files, it is common sense. If we say upload these 10 files and not the rest, support issues go through the roof because people upload those 10 files instead of the ones specified. In order to keep these support issues to a minimum and therefore eliminate costs which would otherwise have to be passed to the customer, we make the upgrade instructions as simple as possible.
For those more technical people who make PHP code changes and are able to we have always recommended doing a file comparison and upload the files you feel you need to. However, if the files are not the correct version, we will tell you to upload the proper file before providing any further support.

We didn't know that our server was going to be destroyed by CPanel two weeks ago. If that hadn't happened, we would have encoded them and already released them a few days ago. We did not wish to delay their release any longer so we made the decision to let them go fully open, even though it means anyone can use them as a conduit to perform upgrades into other forum software.

Less then a 30 day release cycle is gonna keep alot of admins busy. Is this gonna be the norm? Perhaps Gold was rushed? At this rate 3.0.2 will be May 10th. Not exactly something to look forward to.
While I agree security issues should be addressed promptly, this is not what we expected so soon after gold.

You HAVE to either revert the template OR do any changes listed your self manually, which could be quite a few changes :) its simpler usualy to revert and reapply changes.According to the changes specified, there aren't many to the templates I listed. It would take ten times as long to re-apply my customizations than it would be to add the changes described.
I wanted to make sure that what was listed was exactly (and only) what changed.
IE adding <string> to all log-out links, in those 3 templates, and adding the conditionals to the showthread template.
I was confused as to why these both REQUIRED a revert, when in the last update Kier said you could apply the changes manually. I was wondering what the difference was this time.

Our upgrade announcements are written with the least technical customer in mind. These customers wouldn't know what HTML is even if they looked at the templates but it is easy to select a "Revert" command from a drop down menu.
More detailed instructions aren't necessary for more technical users because you have the knowledge and insight to figure out any customized changes you want to make during the upgrade.

No, it does not check the actual files. I wish it did because about 50% of the upgrade problems are directly related to people not uploading the files correctly.

can you list the changes to the files ...
that way those of use with major hacked board may walk through
the changes manually ....
We don't publish every little change to each file between versions. A program like Beyond Compare or Araxis Merge is recommended if you make modifications to your files between versions.

Nice work guys.
We run a german board, 3 hacks included. Took me 10 min to for uploading, db backup and run upgrade script. Plus 25 min for Template checking (in this time board was back online)
Realy nice work. Its an easy job!

I'm having multiple problems importing from UBB Classic 6.2.1.2 to VB 3.01. I was told Impex was compatible with this.
It SEEMED like everything was ok except for errors in the poll import (which isn't that important). However, when I check the actual VB board, lots and lots of threads/topics had 0 posts in them. Categories had the wrong number of posts in them (even after a updating counters), etc.
Anyone else having problems?

So let me get this straight. I *can* at my own risk use one of these file compare tools to upgrade manually??? My god, there's no way I can deal with loosing all my hacks, it took me 100's of hours to get everything like I want. Being a new vb3 user I thought it would be like phpbb where they always had people posting changed files for the upgrades. Has anyone used the file compare method to upgrade? Feeling a bit sick over this because I need to import my phpbb board and I find I have to have 3.0.1 :(

Sorry but you made the choice to modify the default code, and with it the responsibility it entails. It is simply unfeasible to publish a complete list of *every* change that was made. If we did this the Developers would not have time for coding.

That's what I thought. I just wondered why the announcement said "Revert!" rather than "Revert, or manually make these changes" as the last update instructions did. I was worried that may have been more changes than were specified in the announcement.
Luckily those look like very simple changes. Thanks! That shouldn't take long.

I don't understand why so many people want a vb3 to vb3 converter? What would the purpose of THAT be? I think many MORE people would want a vB 2 to vB 3 converter, so they wouldn't have to make changes to the database, and so they could skip the upgrade process. If they had a vB2 to vB3 converter, they would be able to minimize forum downtime, especially very large boards. I know a very large board is waiting on a vb2 to vB3 converter before they upgrade.

Mon 19th Apr '04, 4:24pm
I hadn't heard that a converter would allow you to merge two forums. Where was that info ever stated?
And you totally misread my post. There is no script in the upgrade process that will allow you to do a clean install of vb3 and just import that data, greatly reducing the amount of time a forum must be closed.
Remember, when your dealing with over 20,000 members and 500,000 posts, it takes quite a long time. The forum I'm talking about is actually much larger, but that seems to be the point at which it starts to really take a long time to upgrade. See the thread in support about upgrading really large boards.
So what I would like to know from the developers is, is a vB2 converter in the works? If not, here's my vote for it. Could you add this option to the voting thread?

2. It is available as a download from the member's area.

I'm running 3-0-0 with a small number of template and php file mod's. A bug that the users have complained about concerns subscribing to forums.
For the sake of argument, if my 3-0-0 were unchanged, could I install just subscription.php for now, or is the new file dependent on other changes released with 3-0-1?
Thank you.

Fwiw yes, I encountered similar problems trying to import UBB 6.5.0. The only errors reported were for the polls as you mentioned, everything else passed (see attached image). It looks like the members imported ok along with thread subjects, but some of the threads were empty and those that weren't empty had posts that didn't belong to that thread title. Some of the topic starters were correct, some weren't.
Disclaimer: This is not a post requesting support, Jerry and I already have an open support ticket. I'm just answering a question.

Yea, the polls module shouldn't of gone out :( I'm still working on that.
If the posts were imported, the threads should show them after a counter update and the category order should be changeable.

If you are seeing an hourly slowdown on your server, try this cleanup2.php. It goes into your forums/includes/cron directory. You would only be affected by this if you had a large number of attachments. Having them in the database or filesystem doesn't matter.
This file is also useable with v3.0.0
Thanks for the update, i will try this :)

What are the known problems relating to conversion?
What content would be lost such as posts, threads, stickies, announcements, polls, etc? What would happen to the Usergroups and Permissions?

With the way the design came along with ImpExData, its lends itself to OO. Much easier to write tests in phpUnit for the core. Preference and experience played a part as well, also it will help no end with future development plans.

Any idea when the next upgrade is coming?
I only ask because I'd like to upgrade to 3.0.1, I figured it'd wipe out my hacks, kinda clean things up and then I could go back and reinstall the ones I'd really like to keep. This will take me a couple days though I'm sure, and I'd like to have things running smoothly for a while before I have to update again.
So if you think it'll be at least a few months before the next upgrade I'll move forward and start working on things, if not I'll just wait on the next release.

I have two VBulletin v3.01's that I need to merge together. As incredible as this seems to me, this is not currently suppoted by Jelsoft although it is supported for many other types of BBs, right? If that is so, is there any word on when this might be added?
If it is going to be a while, are there any other workable options? The first thing that comes to mind is to convert one of my existing boards to YABB, UBB, or whichever one works the best and then import it into my other VB3.01. Needless to say, that seems like a huge amount of work and probably imperfect. If this is truly the only way to do it, does anyone know if one of the other BB systems offers a VB3 converter?
I need to get this done, so I hope the VB team is doing something about this issue.

If so, if a user with the same username as the original (version A) as they do on the new copy (version B) then that post is then given to them (in such a way that if an update of the counters is done there post count will increase)
I ask because a few months ago, I tried importing the database and the import got up to S (part the way through searchindex) and as such I ultimately lost anything else (users, threads) - I have manage to rebuild that offline and even upgrade the vb2 that it was to vb3, would be really nice to get those posts back in!

Yes, though you'll have to assosiate the users id's in the 002 stage of the import.

Ok, just to make sure that I am going to be able to do everything required before the vb3 merger is completed.
The member ids on the old upgraded-from-vb2-to-vb3-up-to-january-2004 forums do not match the ones in the new-vb3-since-january-2004 forums.
Will I need to make sure these ids are the same (not a problem, but don't want to do it if it is an unneccesary step) if I want to add these to the members post count.
The older threads, around 300,000 posts will they automatically be given newer post ids, as well as the old threads, around 30,000 of them given new thread ids?
Both forums are up at 3.0.1 now, although the older forums are not available to the public.

Hmmm question :p
I am running 3.0.1, and wish to import an IPB board, but that is hosted on IPB's server. So if i cant add the database details for that i cant import correct? Otherwise any idea how i can get the info i need?

You will need to download the IPB database and retore it to a new database on the same server as the vB you want to import it to. I don't know if IPB gives you that option or not with their hosted server.

Do you mean the vB3-> vB3 importer ?

Do you mean the seperate id's for the same member on the 2 diffrent boards ? If so, you can assosaite them on step 2 of the import.
The older threads, around 300,000 posts will they automatically be given newer post ids, as well as the old threads, around 30,000 of them given new thread ids?
Yes, imported data is give a new id and the old id is stored as importthreadid, importuserid, etc.

Yes, I mean't the importer which will ultimately perform a merger.
Not looked at any of the other importers, as we have used vbulletin for several years.
If I can associate members (which will all have different member IDs) that will be perfect, will we be able to choose which fields from the old member profile will be able to be imported (I have rebuilt their original join date from the time of their first post), also will the posts of members on the old forums who have never rejoined be guests posts with the original names (but obviously not profiles...)?
Thanks for your time, really getting hyped about being able to rejoin my forums :)

Did the users have the same user names ?
I was thinking of adding a flag that would automattically associate in a vB3 import, 2 users if the names were exactly the same.
Handy but dangerous depending on how it is used.

Wouldn't it be more reliable to automatically associated them if the username and the email address is exactly the same or at least the email address?
That would seem to be less of a recipe for trouble since email addresses are unique whereas usernames like Jerry, Joe, Tony, Neo and Trinity are not.

The majority of users did indeed have the same name, tho, as I wasn't exactly sure how the script was going to work I did rename a few users that I knew had changed their name.
Perhaps something as simple as a checkbox would work.
One other thing, importing both the threads and the posts (especially) was very very system intensive -- would be nice to have the option to manually pause the process?

Yes, but I mean in the database.
My old database was imported to my newer database so say posted between
5th Jan up to the point of the merger had thread ids beginning at 1 up to say 3000
The older imported threads then carried on from 3001
They are displayed by the correct date, but I was curious that if imported all the threads to a new fresh database, that this would be reverted and the oldest thread would have id 1. etc.

That will be a diffrence in the way that ubb stores its arrays in perl, and php and the regex parser not being able to figure out completely what it has stored.
Does it not import all the forums ?

Yes, BUT no forums show up on the board, other than "Main Category" and "Main Forum", which were not from UBB. There are 16 records in table "forums" (a main cateogry, and 13 forums from UBB), but much of the data is not there (cols 7-15 empty)

There are two importers for Ikonboard, the ikon_mysql and ikon_file . The ikon file importer is still being worked on, being a flat file system it is some what more problematic than a database one.
I believe there is a converter done by Ikonboard themselves that will allow you to convert a file based board to MySQL :
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-49298.html
Then use the existing ikon_mysql importer that is released in the mean time.

Just wanted to say thanks for the phpbb converter guys. Worked perfectly for us.
There are some tables it did not recognize and I got worried when I saw all the errors come up in red font then the page auto forwarded to the next step. Thinking it went south I stopped and reloaded the DB and ran it again. Sure thing, all the needed tables came up fine, those VB did not need came up red.
(then it keeps going)
It did work though. And the forums we've converted had just been converted from XForum to pnphpbb forums last year. (just in case there's anyone using xforum any more, ;) )
@Jerry, you are correct about ikonboard and converting to MySQL then use the vb converter from there. I did this 2 years ago on another forum and it went fine for the most part.
Except that ikonbored had lots of crap ideas like using HTML in posts. The users could change font colors in posts as an example. (I'm not sure how they do that now days though) Since its not bbcode and if your new vb has HTML turned off, the old threads look like garbage. But the ikon converter did work....
...as does the phpbb converter.
Thanks again Gents.

I recently upgraged my large forum to Invision 2 PR 1 BEFORE someone suggested I try out vBulletin. :( I'll purchase vb303 as soon as there is an import script.
Anyway, I was wondering if there will be an Invision 2 import script soon? And also, I wanted to know how the import script handles large databases? My IPB database will probably be about 100MB before long. Are there any timeout errors or other things I need to be aware of.

100Mb is not very large so that should not be an issue. Jerry will work on the IPB 2.0 importer once version 2.0 is final.

I had verision 3.0.1... I down loaded the new ImpEx version 3.0.3 and went through the required changes in the ImpExConfig.php file and then uploaded to my server as I have always done in the past.. But then the directions leave me.. What do I do next. I went to my import/export file in my admincp .. do I now import everything? By importing those 16 importers does that upgrade me from 3.0.1 to 3.0.3?
I have read the directions many times and I'm still lost when the directions tell me "From there select the system you want to import from and follow the on screen insturctions". How do I know what system I want to import? :confused:

It's my understanding the you only import or export if you are using, or going
to use, something other than vB. Upgrading doesn't use imp/ex I don't think.
Although I haven't upgraded mine yet. I need to do that in the next day or 2.

The impex system is for site going from one forum software to another. It is not meant to use to upgrade your 3.0.1 to 3.0.3.
MrChuck
Wed 4th Aug '04, 2:31pm
I partly understand the answer just given. But I guess what I am wondering is I did go through the process of setting up ImpEx as directed as a new upgrade 3.0.3. Yet in my admincp it tells me I am still running at 3.0.1 and to download the new update 3.0.3 version.
I try to keep my forums updated for my administrators. We just pruned off more then 60,000 posts so we are not that slow.
Since I own the server we have unlimited space and only prune when the posting starts to slow down.
Is there another 3.0.3 that I don't know about?
MrChuck
Wed 4th Aug '04, 2:51pm
It takes awhile with this hard head.. but I at last figured it out. I was clicking the wrong button... instead of downloading the new 3.0.3 version I was clicking the line below that .. it happened to be the ImpEx Program.
Now I will go back to my happy hole. :D
Floris
Wed 4th Aug '04, 3:15pm
Upgrading from version 3.0.1 to version 3.0.3 goes like this:
a) Make a backup of your current working forum files and database.sql dump.
b) Download the vbulletin.zip from the members area (version 3.0.3) and unpack it on your hard drive. Rename config.php.new to config.php and fill in all the details as required and matching your database and forum settings. (To ensure you use the latest and proper variables)
c) Upload all the 3.0.3 files from your hard drive to the web server, overwriting (not skipping or resuming) all the files in ascii transfer mode (except the images)
d) Run the forum/install/upgrade.php file (not any other file) through your browser and follow the on-screen instructions untill it has 100% completed the upgrade and brings you into the control panel.
Impex is not the upgrade script. it is a forum import/export script.
