View Full Version : Server Matrix Problems

I have always stood by Server Matrix, but this is out of line. They totally messed up my hard drive by doing totally abnormal partitions on it. Now they want me to pay for them to put it right!

Take a look at this ticket:

Hi, we have just bought a server with you.
Here is how it was partitioned.

"Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2 2.0G 235M 1.7G 13% /
/dev/hda1 99M 26M 69M 27% /boot
/dev/hda8 47G 256M 45G 1% /home
none 755M 0 755M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda7 2.0G 33M 1.9G 2% /tmp
/dev/hda5 9.7G 1.9G 7.4G 21% /usr
/dev/hda6 9.7G 103M 9.1G 2% /var
/dev/hdb1 74G 33M 70G 1% /backup"

This will cause problems as our home directory needs to be bigger than 45gb.
Is there any chance that you could look into it?

Thanks.

Where would you prefer the additional space come from. From what I can tell there is not alot of room to play with on the first drive. We could re partition the backup drive to have 2 partitions one /backup and one /home2 for the additional needed space. Any repartitioning of the main drive would require a full os reload tho.

Would i have to pay for an OS reload? I have only had this server for 24 hours and i did not request for the hard drive to be partitioned this way.

(dmurphy-04/13/04-23:21):
What is the exact partitioning scheme you would like us to use.

------------------------------------------

(c13531host-04/13/04-23:50):

My other server is fine. Here is how it was done:

/dev/sda3 72G 13G 55G 19% /
/dev/sda1 99M 48M 46M 52% /boot
/dev/hdc1 37G 17G 19G 48% /backup
none 505M 0 505M 0% /dev/shm
/usr/tmpDSK 243M 5.0M 225M 3% /tmp
/tmp 243M 5.0M 225M 3% /var/tmp

Except /backup does not need to be re-partitioned on this new machine.
------------------------------------------
(bsteward-04/14/04-07:23):
In order to do this, you will need an OS reload. Unfortunately, since you didn't make any special partitioning requests, an OS reload fee will be applied.
--------------------------------------
(c13531host-04/14/04-07:59):
But this one was messed up. It should not be like this, my other Xeon was not partitioned in the same way, so I didn't expect this one to be either, hence why I didn't make any "special instructions".
This is not fair, why should I have to pay for SM's mistake?
I am not paying for this as it isn't my fault. As he said, there is a lot of wasted space, so i take it that all SM servers now come with wasted space?

This isn't fair.

--------------------------------------
(c13531host-04/14/04-08:00):
I am strongly considering whether i should move back to EV1Servers, they actually fixed their mistakes for me, at their expense and not mine. This is totally out of line, how would you feel if you had just bought a server that had been abnormally partitioned? And then being asked to pay for them to fix the problem that they created.

I have 2 80gb hard drives, one was supposed to be for backups and the other was for everything else, but wouldn't anyone expect more than 45gb for the home directory?!

is this a cpanel server? What they did looks like the cpanel recommended partitioning....

BUT... my cpanel server looks like your 2nd one and I thought that was their 'standard' partitioning scheme. Maybe they decided to follow cpanel recommendations?

This is what most of my servers look like:

root@sonar [~]# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 74580400 2549960 68180868 4% /
/dev/hda1 101089 24425 71445 26% /boot
/dev/hdb1 38464340 32828 36477608 1% /backup
none 513996 0 513996 0% /dev/shm

I actually put in orders for new servers and I was expecting to get HT-enabled CPUs. Instead they had assigned me older servers that had been in rotation. They took $75 per server from me to switch out the CPU and update the kernel to allow for hyperthreading. They kept insisting that I should've put in a special request when I placed the order. I was upset because the servers were unusable for a few days while I was waiting for this to be resolved when I needed to start deploying accounts to them.

When ordering a server from *any* DS provider, I would always specify what you want the partitions to be as many will set it up their way or their standard way that they do all servers. If you specifically noted that you wanted the paritions one way, then I don't think you should have to pay anything, though if you didn't note anything then they have little to go on and charging to format/reload the OS and repartition probably will acrue a fee.

I would never assume that just because one server is one way that the next will be the same. I've ordered from 4-5 providers, all different paritions, even with multiple boxes. Since box #2, I specify anything I want done upfront to prevent such from happening. Downtime due to me not specifiying what I need upfront is not something I want :).

Thanks for your replies. I've managed to get it sorted out though, so i am happy at the moment. Just gotta get the kernel changed before IO wait kills my box.

HostOrbit - what they did was put a box back into rotation without switching the HDs to a fresh one. And instead of admitting their mistake, they tried to get you to cover the cost.

I had the same problem with a second server I ordered last month. It had RH 9, and no control panel. Yet I ordered a RHE3 with Cpanel. They then tried to say I needed a reload, and would need to agree to the 75 charge. After 2 days of them refusing to admit they screwed up, and them insisting I had to pay extra for what was suppose to be a fresh server, I gave up.
I told them to cancel the order, and notified my CC company that I would be disputing the charge from them.

IMHO, they are just looking to get people for all the money they can. Their support ticket system sux, and Being on hold for over 45 min just to have the person on the phone tell me that the person who can help me is busy, well just too much.

just my 2 cents

I had to pay $75 to get my newly ordered server switched to a P4 HT-enabled one. Regarding their phone systems: all calls have been answered within two rings for me.

The partition you have in the first post is what we run, only difference is we have the var and usr at 5.2 gig versus 9.7 and move that space to the home directory.

They now ask for specialized partitioning instructions at the time of quote so at least you made a request and they listened.
