View Full Version : Importers (requests & poll)
Jerry
Sun 4th Apr '04, 6:19pm
With the upcoming release of the importer system I'm sorting out the order for which importers to do and what order.
Currently there is: ubb.eve 4.02, ubb.classic 6.7, IPB 1.3 and phpBB2.
Next I'm going to be working on OpenTopic and wBB.
After that there is a list but no definite order so here a poll bit like the one (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13880) John did a while ago.
Suggestions ?

Would be nice to have one for FuseTalk one day. (www.fusetalk.com) I have several clients currently using it, that I would like to convert over. (One is making the conversion anyway, and losing all his posts. I did a quick and dirty process to at least import his users.)

Not yet no to be honest, though when writing the importers I'm after as much data as I can get, importing features is a bit harder to do though I'll look into it ;)
Though a "new features I R want" thread might be the way to go.

vbulletin to vbulletin would be nice, telnet and ssh are not standard on all hosts and I recently had to cancel a move because my new host didn't allow this access. Why offer a sql dump if you can't ever import it?
I'm slowly working my way over to vb3, and I think some of this is solved (vbulletin team will assist in restores). But for someone like me on 2.3.0 it's VERY frustrating!

Am I reading this thread correctly...I am in desperate need of the PHPBB to vB3 importer...I have had lengthy conversations with Steve Machol already about this and expressed my grave concern over the lack of its release. I am really behind the proverbial '8 ball' because the importers have not been released yet. I have a site ready to be deployed, but can't because a major part of the release includes the new vB3 forum system. A little help on where and/or when I can get this would make my situation a little easier to deal with. Thanks.

I think the lowest version I've tested it on was 6.2.something.
In the early versions it was PM's that were the trickiest.

If so the only commonality at the moment are the users as long as they are sync'ed up. I will have to write another import for that one as the schema is so diffrent from phpBB2.

At the moment, I've not documented each importer as to the exact elements that get imported per module just the API, but by nature of the importers you can see on the main menu what is done generally (i.e. post, threads, moderators, etc).

I'm referring to PNphpbb2, which is a modified version of phpBB specifically modified to work with postnuke. The dev site is http://www.pnphpbb.com/. Not sure if it's the same that you're thinking of, and I do recall there being other phpbb ports for postnuke.
The version I'm running is 1.2a, which was the latest last time I checked.
Seems I remember seeing a post somewhere on this site where someone removed the nuke_ prefix from his db tables (which left the original phpbb table names), and then ran the phpbb importer and it worked. My question is more to the point of would it be easy for you to modify the script to recognize the nuke_ prefix and then call it a pnphpbb2 importer....and also I was wondering if the VB3 version of the phpbb script would have changed to the extent that it would no longer work with PNphpbb2 (minus the nuke_ prefixes)?

To be honest with out having a PNphpBB database to test againsn't I could say either way, though table prefixes are taken care of in the new importers.
I'll download it and have a go.

I belive there arn't any major diffrences to the database between 1.2 and 1.3, so it should be fine.
Personally I would try it straight off, if it dosn't work submitt a bug. Then upgrade to 1.3 and go from there.

I see.
I've got a suggestion tho. Maybe you should create a closed thread and stick in somewhere - and post a new message whenever you update the package. And then, of course, tell short about what in the package that have been updated (like a spesific phpBB2 bug).
Whenever I see you say that you have updated the package, I test it out to see if the phpBB2 bugs are fixed, and then I give you feedback. It would be easier for me to do that if you told us when you've fixed a bug and updated the package.
Just a thought. :)

Define a text layout which can survive over time and versions. A windows INI file is an example. Something with NAME=VALUE pairs, organized into sections and/or categories etc.
Always import into vb from this. The importer takes care of missing values. You cannot know what the other fellow is supplying. Stop trying.
Now all other importers are a matter of dumping into that format.
You could even document it, and let other people convert their own data into that format, then use your script to suck it into vb.
It appears to me you have done something sexy with the importers. Objects and classes and not a helluva lot of documentation. You are dealing with people who are new to the software, and are looking to get this one step over with so they can get their hands dirty. I speak for myself of course.
Keep it simple.
Good luck.
Jerry
Thu 13th May '04, 2:34am
Well I looked at lots of different ways of doing it and the system that I came up with in the end does 3 things, firstly keeps the data model of vB intact by only allowing valid data to be imported, the vB2 importers would often break the database and loose dependencies.
Secondly it hides a lot of the workings in the core system to abstract the separate importers away from it, so there is no dependency on the source.
Thirdly is makes writing the imports easy (ok, I'm bias as I wrote it, but its true) because mostly all you have to worry about is the middle part of any module where you add the mandatory and non mandatory data.
I did think of value paired system where you would define matches in something like an INI file, but there is too many holes in the design and it doesn't cater to lots of different data sources. You'd have to get the source data some how as well.
As it is the vast majority of the time you do know what the other person is supplying, but more importantly you know what you can accept, ImpExData takes care of all that with is_valid() so you don't have to worry about it.
I did do (and released) a OO-API doc with ImpEx, there are more tools that go with it, most of the code for the system is automatically generated as it is.
Compared to vB3 its fairly simple, its just the design lent itself to OO better than structured.
As for other people developing with it I am working on some docs and other resources to make this easier.
Cheers for the feedback :)

I understood the beauty of your model immediately.
It does not make writing imports easy for a stranger. I do not want to know the details of vb, and I appreciate your hiding them.
But you hid the baby with the bath water, so to speak.
Although you have hidden the ugly details of vb from me, you have also hidden the stunningly seek and perfect details of your importer module. I am lost in pages and pages of techincal documentation and scripts.
I did think of value paired system where you would define matches in something like an INI file, but there is too many holes in the design and it doesn't cater to lots of different data sources. You'd have to get the source data some how as well.
Yet, in another thread somewhere (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?p=671122#post671122), you have asked me for a sample user file.
A simple example would help me wonders...
1. Make sure your script is in this place and has these headers.
2. Create this object or that object.
3. Feed this object your database details.
4. Modify this function to handle field conversions.
5. Run your script and poof, your member file is converted.
So I guess my suggestion is: documentation for idiots with a simple task at hand.
Lord knows I can be an idiot.
Cheers

Hi Jerry -- Now I'm really confused. Judging by this post (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=670229&postcount=9), the converter that's listed as "done," i.e., "DC Forum+ / Discus Pro" is actually only DC Forum (http://dcscripts.com/) and not Discus (http://www.discusware.com/). You apparently misinterpreted my request of several weeks ago to add Discus to the poll (though you referred to flat file or MySQL backend -- both of which could mean Discus), and now I erroneously rallied, and misdirected other Discus users to vote for DC Forum, pushing it up to "finished" status very quickly. As I alluded to in this thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100105), I have been going back and forth with vBulletin staff for quite some time now. Now, I fear that even if you do add Discus to the poll, it will be a start from ground-zero, and all of us who voted for DC Forum or "other" will have no recourse.
Please help. Please.

I hope vB2 gets done soon - it's not at the top of the vote list, but it surely must be easier than, say, Yahoo groups?
I've got a fairly large forum that I want to move over to vB3, but it has been tweaked quite a bit and I need to figure out how to tweak vB3 in the same way.
I don't want to have to do all my modifications twice and I have to keep downtime to the absolute minimum, so being able to perfect my vB3 install while the vB2 one continues and then once I'm ready doing an import, would be fantastic.
Cheers!

I have been getting by with a link back to my old Discus forum for the old messages, but I agree with Jacobs comments and feelings. Discus was not even on the list if I recall when this first started. How many of the 16 votes for DC were actually for Discus and how many votes were cast for something else before Discus made it on the list that cant be changed to the correct selection now that its available? I see now there is a seperate Discus listing now but with 0 votes, we all know that does not truely reflect the interest in an importer for Discus.
I also see that its listing the intent to test on user accounts and I assume that plans to test importing the messages from a Discus forum, would be following closely after? All my users have long already migrated themselves over to the vB forum and anyone who has not, can easily create their new account so, my situation for example, the message importer portion would be much more pratical.
Like I said, I personally am working around it fine and its not something I "have to have this second" so please dont take my comments that way. But, I can see how there can be a level of fustration that we cant even properly reflect our need for something that should have been on the listing from the get go.
Jerry
Tue 18th May '04, 1:46pm
The poll is just one influence in the decision making for the order they are done in.
DC had hardly any votes and was done for other reasons.
The belief that the Discus votes effected the DC+ importer is completely wrong.

How far back down the UBB classic chain does the ubb.classic 6.7 converter cover? I'm working on a system to replace an old UBB classic 5.47. Plans were to convert into vB 2.3.5 then upgrade to 3.0.1, but if I can import directly into 3.0.1 that would obviously be preferable.

Defiantly, though there are too many bugs with the current importers that I/we need to get sorted along with some functionality that didn't make it into the core with the release, like attachments and internal link parsing.
I'd like to get what we have running as smooth as possible before putting time into more importers. There are 13 out now and 3 more in dev with 4 more waiting that I have data for now.
Also by the time that’s all sorted there should be some nice IPB 2 boards available as test data for me to use.
I've put it on the poll.

Also, is vb2 one of the ones in dev?

I'm leaving the ones that are done in there for completeness so I don't get asked for them when they are already done.
The poll is multi vote so people can vote for as many as they like, I made it like that from day one.

I am well aware of the differences between a import and an upgrade. But I think you need to give the customer what they want. Let them decide which route they want to take to use new software. There are some circumstances where an upgrade is just not possible. Such is the case with very large forums, with databases in the 50 gigabyte range.

Its a mute point seeing as both are avaiable anyway and have been for a while. As far as I'm aware there arn't any vB2 bugs, not that are reported in the bug tracker anyway.

What's about the www.parsimony.net (http://www.parsimony.net/) - Forums?
I've 4 Forums to migrate...
Could you provide source data to develop and importer from ?
Is it a MySQL backend?

There have been a few importers released since my last post here and quite a lot of bugs fixed.
I am currently working on the discus_mysql importer at the moment.
The main outstanding areas of work at the moment are phpBB attachments as I have no test data or sites for that and a PNphpBB importer, though I have yet to find a default Post Nuke install board that I can base an importer on.
Apart from that with (soon to be) 32 importers the poll will soon be closed and import requests taken on a per customer basis, i.e. if you want one post in the importer forum or PM me.

Can we also do ImpEx scripts? I have a few ideas.

You can write modules, like I have fof phpBB2 and IPB2 etc, though you can't release modifyied source, i.e. change the ImpEx core.
I belive vb.org is probally the best place for that discussion and releases etc.

I'm asked to convert a ASP/MS SQL site into PHP/MySQL, and so I have to convert their ASP Playground (http://www.aspplayground.net) forum as well. If it's possible to make an importer for MS SQL, then I would surely recommend vBulletin to the owners of that site.

What's the latest on WebBBS?
Nearly a year ago I sent in several thousand WebBBS messages as test data. Plus a functioning WebBBS-->VB3 script (limited, but basic functionality).
I'm surprised to now see a request for test data in the poll.
If I provide it again, will it help to bump WebBBS up the priority list?

A year ago ? vB3 was only released in march.
Though if you PM me the details I can look at it.

Yep. I rounded it off. 10-11 months = nearly a year.
I've long ago mislaid the support ticket number that started our correspondence, Jerry. But you & I exchanged numerous e-mails on this subject.
I forwarded a WebBBS->vB3 script . . . one that started out as webBBS->vB2.X, but which had been hacked by user "tmorris" to perform some basic vB3 functionality. For example, it included support for "threading" (maintaining the parent/child relationship between posts & replies), but it didn't import any USER data. All posts were imported as those of a "Guest User".
The results of a test run of this script can be seen here:
http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=58
I also forwarded some sample data. Most of which I still have -- still unimported.
One unresolved riddle, as I recall, concerned older versions of webBBS which stored dates in a text fashion; whereas newer versions stored UNIX-style dates. Others were relatively trivial -- like importing quotation marks (stored as " ) properly.
What other details would you like me to send? I'm willing to send/share anything that would help this along.
Best,
Bill

As have I, I had a quick look as the system name seemed familiar though my memory was found wanting.
I do apologize, I must of over looked this one.

I dare say with the time that has passed and my lack of recall on the matter it would be best to start a new ticket and re start the process, so that I can look at it a fresh.
The only thing I can think is other importers took priority on shear numbers of requests and that in the normal course of house keeping I deleted the data by mistake, as unless I have permission, I don't keep user data once an import has been written.
Also with the improvments in impex over the last year I would expect that the user Guest status can be soved also.

If its a default phpnuke install PM me and if you can give me a copy of the database I'll be able to do the importer, its just finding a default install that is the difficult bit for me.

Just a more strategic sales strategy...
Perhaps providing a bridge(importer) between the old vBLite/vB1.x users to vB3? :)

Yup, it's been fun keeping on top of it to date (schema changes etc), though this is a fairly major one I think.
As always if there is a system or a change to an existing one to be done to keep the importers up to date and to give people options, I'm sure it will happen ;)

It will depend on how many votes it gets on the poll, i.e. once the demand is high enough.
Is there a conversion to the MySQL back end ?

I'll ask the dc-forum support for a conversion (flatfile > mysql). if this exists, we could use the importer system i think...

I think that there is a tru need for a comprehensive PHP-Nuke Import script. And yes, I know there is a phpBB script but one for the complete conversion of the PHP Nuke implementation would be more useful as many MANY Nukers are coming to the realization that vB just Rocks alot more than PHP-Nuke.

There is a PNphpBB2 (Post nuke) importer, its basically the phpBB one with the slight changes.
