lol, sorry, I did a search for "Simple Machines" and the guy said there wasn't enough demand and referred to this thread as to the forums that were in demand. Good to know there's an importer, I'll be moving another board to 3.5 as soon as it's released.

Ive always said that the holy grail of converters would be WWWBoard (Matt's Script Archive) to vBulletin. There's still a lot of ancient WWWBoard systems out there, churning away since the mid-1990s.
WWWBoard messages are stored as individual HTML files (1.html, 2.html, 3.html and so on). When a new message is posted, the board's wwwboard_main.html (or whatever you decided to call it) and other HTML files in the thread tree are altered, with links to other messages in the thread are added.
WWWBoard also has a ton of other quirks typical of mid-1990s-era Web-based forum software, among them no user registration system and no post count tracking.
EDIT: Okay, it's possible ... but complicated and ugly
WWWBoard --> WebBBS - http://awsd.com/scripts/webbbs/mods/wwwboard_converter.txt
WebBBS --> phpBB - http://warped.org/linux/webbbs_to_phpbb_0.8.tar.gz
phpbb --> vBulletin - vBulletin ImpEx

Is there somewhere a guide to write a custom import system?
I need it to import a custom board: I tried to look the source code of a couple of existing importers, but unfortunately it's not so clear how to write a new one from scratch :(
Any hint will be much appreciated

Every link to the Importer List (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=728082&postcount=21) throughout vb.com is now broken. Not good! Where is the current importer list and could it be prominently placed somewhere?

Don't get me started on Drupals stupid structure. It was this reason that I'm switching to vbulletin. I was considering writing my own forum module for drupal, but in the end I just decided to go with the tried and true software: Vbulletin.

I've done my best to figure it out, though I didn't have the source forum running side by side with the development so there might be some feed back that I'll have to fix, if that is the case just start a support ticket and ask for me.

I had totally missed out on this forum and had asked Jerry through pm about subdreamer, just thinking about it, there is a lot more to subdreamer's core with importing to the usersystem than just the users in the first place, but to be honest, this is the most important part (I presume that any custom data gets transfered as is?)

Jerry,
I would recommend creating an import script for MaxWebPortal and/or MWPX. Both have thousands of installations and date back a number of years, having originally formed out of a Snitz 2000 project. The entire source code and database format are freely available (see www.mwpx.com (http://www.mwpx.com) for example). I'm currently working on a such a project for a very large MWPX site to migrate to vbulletin and having an ImpEx import script would be very very handy.
BTW if you work on a per hour basis for a fee let me know, I could use some help!:D

wwwboard is almost the mother of all forum software, dating back to 1995.

How about an export/import for vBulletin itself? This would provide a way for people to start from scratch with an unhacked forum, and no extra files on their hosts or data in their databases also. May be especially useful when upgrading from a hacked forum. It could be extended to include private message in addition to users and threads/posts.
Thanks

Fantastic!
Now, how do I do this. I wish to export from 3.5.4 on one host, and import into a brand new installation of 3.6.2 on another host. Neither host appears to support cross domain access to the MySQL database.
Any help appreciated.
Sorry going off topic here - this should probably be moved to a different thread/forum?
feldon23
Mon 30th Oct '06, 9:47am
Yes, you should post in a separate thread. This is the "Importers (requests...)" topic. Since an importer already exists for 3.5.4 into 3.6.2, no need to request.
There is really no reason to use ImpEx (Import/Export) for your situation. ImpEx does not necessarily import everything and is not the recommended method of upgrading a forum.
I would create a full MySQL backup of your 3.5.4 forum and download it. Restore it to the new site. Upload the 3.6.2 vBulletin files. Edit your config.php file. Run the upgrade script.

Honestly I doubt Jerry would be available to spend time updating the importer for a beta script, since things will obviously change for the final. You would have to wait until a final is relesaed at which point Jerry would update Impex as needed.

Unfortunately, for some reason, phpBB are not releasing any kind of update script between their beta versions themselves, so perhaps this could be some kind of opportunity for vB/JelSoft? (here's to hoping anyway!)

If that's the case I could release a phpBB3 system based on the latest Beta as the schema is unlikely to change that much vr the code base, then I'll update it to the latest version when it comes out, as per normal.
Though as a rule systems arn't released for beta versions.
I'd still need the phpBB3 database to see whats going on.

Same as any other really, set a vBulletin forum as the source and you vBulletin with vB Blog installed as the target, run ImpEx, select Vb Blog and forum2blog from the menus, then run all the modules (skipping the 002) associate users.

Make a copy of the database with all the forums.
In your forum manager delete all of the forums apart from the one you want to blog, take a copy of the database.
Use that copy as the source and revert the database to the origional backup (i.e. the complete one)
Do the import to test and revert to the backup of stage one during testing.

Thank you, I did not know I had to do it this way. I thought I could choose a forum from which I want the blogs.
What do you mean with "Use that copy as the source and revert the database to the origional backup (i.e. the complete one)"? I have just configured Impex configuration file, made target database my actual forum community and source database is the temporary forum where I have removed all forums except blog forum. Is it that what you mean?
I always get this error on importing blog users.

I did a little digging to refresh my memory. WordPress has a list of the importers is has available at http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content. One of those includes a Blogger import, which, if I remember correctly, basically has you input your authentication info (username/pw) and it logs into Blogger and imports all blog posts and replies.
Is this helpful at all? Would you be able to look at the WP code and see how they're importing from Blogger?
I think being able to pull posts in from existing "mainstream" blog hubs would be a HUGE benefit for board owners who are trying to entice users to post content on their site, rather than simply linking to blog hosting hub.
Thanks. Let me know if I can help by digging through code or whatever. :)

Will it be possible to import posts from a blog provider like Blogspot? I've done so previously with another blogging tool that could transfer everything over, but I don't know how difficult it would be to do into vB.

The blogs will be added to the user yes, though existing blogs/comment won't be merged.

Have you started a support ticket ? If not do and ask for me, and if you have ask that it's passed to me so I can see what's going on in situ.

Drupal and b2evolution are on the to-do list as soon as the current blog importers are ok.

Voting for phpbb2 plus.
Atm. it's the 4th day, and 8th import, and still trying :P Would be nice if there would be less time consuming way to do this.
Also with phpbb2 (plus) not supporting php5 I think there will be quite a lot of people going for the most stable board there is atm., yes, meaning vBulletin :)

As I remember plus is just phpBB that has a bunch of mods added so the phpBB2 importer should be ok for that ?

Thank you for your quick reply, and yes, I also thought that.
Still I'm experiencing some huge difficulties, which I’ll describe in a separate thread, so I won’t mess up this one.

I need to move a forum away from ProBaords and wondering is there or will there be a "bot" importer so that they can get away from the grasps of an unstable free forum (as in it can go away at anytime)? 64,000+ posts is allot too loose.
Thanks

Our old forum is using ActiveForums (ASP.NET) on top of DotNetNuke. What would need to be done to have a converter made?
Product Page: http://www.activemodules.com/Products/ActiveForums/tabid/58/Default.aspx
We essentially want to just carry over the posts from the old forum and just have them named (so we can still know who had posted what) and marked as guest posts, as we were looking to have users just re-register on our new site.
I have a copy of the MSSQL database with the forum data.

what ImpEx REALLY needs is the ability to stop and restart an import and, be able to change the number of items to be processed at a time.
At present... if something happens during an import, and if ImPex stops, and if you try to start it again, it tries to resume the previously aborted import using the same number of records. Since the reason the import was stopped was because too many records were trying to be processed, it would be good if one could change that value before the Impex was resumed.

Hi Jerry,
I'd like to import a YAF 1.9.0 (NET v2.0) board (4,400 threads; 123,000 posts; 930 members) into our existing vb 3.6.8 (28,000 threads, 1,160,000 posts; 11,400 members).
Do I have to submit a ticket?
Let me know, please.
Thanks.
Regards.

With 3.7 and other sites that have such things (and the social networking bits) there are some new modules being written to be added to existing importers.

My small site uses the zoints tags and I would hate to lose those when I use impex to combine the sites. Is there an importer that will import tags from a totally different site into the vb tag system?

There are currently no tag import functions, so no modules that support it.

Though vBulletin's ImpEx doesn't support this, you may wish to use this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=170314) modification available at vBulletin.org to import your tags to the vB 3.7 tag system. Then do your merger (since I would assume that ImpEx would import tags from 3.7 into another 3.7).

I have been following that mod and had the duh moment after I posted before that I could upgrade to 3.7 on both boards and then impex together.

Invision Power Board & Invision Community Blog convertors are a bit outdated.
I've played today with impex, dit test convert to vB 3.7.1 (700 000 posts). Found following problems:
IPB 2.3.2 - poll not converted at all (they've changed data format)
Invision Comminuty Blog 1.3.3 - doesn't convert at all (says, inappropriate version after database check)
Could you fix that?

The usual nuke candidates aren't going to be added as there is little commonality amongst the source data I've seen, the parent forum importer can be used, i.e. phpBB2.

Typically hosted systems are dependant on a revenue model, so different things are paid for, i.e. access to back up of the data.

Understand that, Jerry. It's just that there are a lot of people who use forumer.com as their host for their forums. Some of them have got 200+ members and are restricted with what they can do.
Their main forum was upgraded to vBulletin software.
